Men’s Basketball Coach Saul Phillips to participate in Disability Speaks Sept. 14


The Athens Community is invited to attend Disability Speaks from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Athens Community Center, 701 East State Street. This event is being presented by the Athens City Commission on Disabilities and hosted by Mayor Steve Patterson.

The program includes:

The keynote address, "Universal Design serves Everyone", will be presented by Barbara Conover, a consultant in the fields of ADA, Fair Housing compliance, Universal Design and Aging-in-Place.

The Athens County Community Singers, conducted by Stephanie Morris, will perform at the beginning of the evening.

Mayor Patterson will present the annual Athena Award, honoring outstanding service to the city of Athens and to those in the community who live with disabilities.

Challenged by Choice: Ten community members, who have accepted the “Challenge” of assuming a simulated disability for 24 hours, will share their experiences and what they have discovered from those experiences. This year’s challenge focused on infrastructure accessibility. Pizza and soft drinks will be served.
