Athens Campus to host activities designed to welcome students, faculty to OHIO


From orientations to opportunities to socialize and get to know their new home away from home, Ohio University is hosting many activities in the weeks leading up to the start of fall semester to welcome new students and faculty to the Bobcat family and to prepare them for the academic year. 

Ohio University’s fall semester starts Monday, Aug. 28, kicking off an historic year for the University as it welcomes its 21st president, Dr. M. Duane Nellis, who began his tenure at OHIO on June 12. 

President Nellis will preside over his first President’s Convocation for First-Year Students on Sunday, Aug. 27, (see details below) capping off a month of welcoming activities that include:

International Student Arrival and Orientation

Hundreds of international students will begin arriving on the Athens Campus the week of Aug. 13, with graduate international student arrival planned for Aug. 13-14 and undergraduate international student arrival slated for Aug. 20-21. 

OHIO’s International Student and Faculty Services (ISFS) has a variety of activities planned to both welcome students to Ohio University and the Athens community and help them prepare for their coursework. Among those activities are orientation programs.

International Graduate Student Orientation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, in Baker University Center. Check-in will begin at 9 a.m. in the Theatre Lounge on the second floor of Baker University Center. A Housing Fair for incoming graduate students will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in the Baker University Center Theatre Lounge.

International Undergraduate Orientation will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, in Baker University Center. Check-in will begin at 9 a.m. in the Theatre Lounge on the second floor of Baker University Center.

ISFS will also host a wide range of social events between Aug. 15 and Aug. 25 to help international students made friends and get acclimated to Ohio University and the community. A full schedule of international student orientation events is available here

During the 2016-17 academic year, the Ohio University community included nearly 1,400 international students – 579 undergraduates and 808 graduate students. These students hailed from 112 countries. 

New Faculty Welcome

In addition to welcoming new students, the OHIO community is gearing up to welcome approximately 100 new faculty members to the Bobcat family. 

The Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Planning, in conjunction with OHIO’s Center for Teaching and Learning, will be hosting a New Faculty Welcome event from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The event will provide critical information, resources and support for new faculty teaching on all of OHIO’s campuses.

New Teaching Assistant Orientation

OHIO’s Center for Teaching and Learning will welcome new teaching assistants and share with them relevant OHIO resources and services during an orientation that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. A special program designed specifically for international teaching assistants will be held that same day from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Ballroom. For more information, click here

Graduate Student Orientation

Ohio University’s Graduate College will be welcoming approximately 800 new graduate students to the OHIO community this fall semester. An orientation for those students will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Undergraduate Student Orientation

In an effort to foster academic integration and socialization for transfer and first-year students, OHIO’s Office of Undergraduate Orientation Programs will be hosting orientation sessions for students who were unable to attend Bobcat Student Orientation earlier in the summer.

Orientation for transfer students and their families and guests will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center, and activities will be held throughout the day and into the early evening.

Orientation for first-year students and their families and guests is slated for Friday, Aug. 25. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center with activities to occur through the early evening.

Welcome Weekend Activities

Ohio University’s Welcome Weekend festivities commence with the opening of residence halls to first-year students Aug. 24-25 and to returning students on Aug. 26. Welcome Weekend activities include opportunities for new and returning students to socialize, have some fun, get acquainted with the Athens Campus and – for first-year students – to officially begin their OHIO experience.

Thursday, Aug. 24

Twilight Movie – Ohio University’s Campus Involvement Center will be showing “The House” at 9 p.m. in the Baker University Center Ballroom. This event is free and open to all students. Refreshments will be provided.

Friday, Aug. 25

Class of 2021 Photo – For the third consecutive year, incoming first-year students will gather on the field at OHIO’s Peden Stadium for a group photo, capturing the first moment the Class of 2021 will come together as one. The photo shoot is scheduled for 7 p.m., and first-year students are encouraged to show their Bobcat pride by wearing green, white and gray for the photo.

Convo Comedy Night with Michelle Wolf – Immediately after the Class of 2021 Photo, students are invited to Ohio University’s Convocation Center for a little laughter with comedian Michelle Wolf. A former writing supervisor and performer on “Late Nights with Seth Meyers,” Wolf made her late-night television debut as a comic in July 2014 and currently works as on-air contributor and writer for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” Sponsored by OHIO’s Campus Involvement Center, this event is free and open to all students. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. with Wolf scheduled to take the stage at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 26

College Welcomes – Each college within OHIO’ academic community will hold welcome sessions at 1 p.m. for first-year students. (See sidebar for locations.)

Party at Ping – The Department of Campus Recreation invites all OHIO students to the Charles J. Ping Recreation Center from 6 to 9 p.m. for free food and lots of fun. The evening will include:

  • Food and refreshments from local food trucks and vendors, including OHIO’s own Hungry Cat food truck
  • Music provided by the Power 105.5 Jambulance
  • A petting zoo provided by Honey Hill Farms
  • A magician and caricature artists
  • A photo booth
  • Indoor and yard games, including Kin-Ball (giant volleyball), KanJam, corn hole and ladder golf
  • Inflatable jousting and an obstacle course
  • “The Big Splash”
  • A Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament featuring Senior Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones
  • Tables featuring information on Campus Recreation and other Ohio University offices

In addition, the Ping Center, including its 36-foot, double-sided climbing wall, will be open for workouts and open recreation.

OHIO Late Nights – Ohio University’s Department of Housing and Residence Life will hold its first OHIO Late Nights program of the semester beginning at 9 p.m. in the Living Learning Center on South Green. These programs, held most Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., feature a variety of activities, including karaoke, games, free snacks and more. OHIO Late Nights are free and open to all Ohio University students. 

Sunday, Aug. 27

President’s Convocation for First-Year Students – Ohio University’s Welcome Weekend activities will conclude with an OHIO tradition celebrating the newest members of the Bobcat family. 

Ohio University’s 21st President, Dr. M. Duane Nellis, will deliver the annual President’s Convocation for First-Year Students beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center. This year’s ceremony will mark a first – both for OHIO’s Class of 2021, celebrating the official start of these incoming Bobcats’ academic journey at Ohio University, and for President Nellis who will deliver his first-ever Convocation for First-Year Students address. 

Resident assistants will escort first-year students to the Convocation Center for the festivities. Attendance is mandatory for first-year students, and OHIO faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to share in this milestone for the Class of 2021.

Immediately following the ceremony, President Nellis and OHIO’s Marching 110 will lead all first-year students in a spirited procession up Richland Avenue and through the College Gate at Court and Union Streets, officially inducting the Class of 2021 into the OHIO community.

Campus Involvement Fair – After proceeding through the College Gate, first-year students and all OHIO students are invited to participate in the annual Campus Involvement Fair, which will be held on the College Green. Hosted by the Campus Involvement Center, the event will showcase more than 300 of the University’s nearly 500 student organizations and clubs. Representatives from those organizations will be available to provide information, answer questions and sign students up to participate in their groups. The Campus Involvement Fair will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
