Tantrum Theater presents family-friendly ‘Into The West’

Looking for a fun way to beat the heat with the family this summer? Tantrum Theater concludes its second season with the imaginative Irish fairytale, “Into the West,” running Aug. 1–19. The hour-long production’s energetic pace and touching story are sure to captivate children and adult audiences alike.

Ally and Finn settle in the big city of Dublin, expecting a better life. But, trapped in mourning for their mother, they merely take care of Pa, who tries to drink away her memory. When a mythical horse trots into the scene, they race off into the Irish countryside. At the end of their journey is the sea, their father transformed and even a bit of what they’ve lost. With just three actors playing 60 roles, and live music throughout, “Into the West” bursts with imagination and heart. The production’s opening weekend coincides with the annual Dublin Irish Festival, and a ticket to “Into the West” includes complimentary admission to the Festival, redeemable at the Dublin Recreation Center.

The production is under the direction of Jen Wineman, whose work has been seen in theaters in New York and across the country, including the New York Musical Festival, Walkerspace, Ars Nova and Asolo Repertory Theatre.

The production’s creative team includes Scenic Designer Deb O, with credits at New Victory Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, Yale Repertory Theatre and more. Serving as Costume Designer is Heidi Leigh Hanson, whose design work in the San Francisco Bay Area earned a Theatre Bay Area Award nomination in 2014. They are joined by Lighting Designer Alan C. Edwards, with credits at Asolo Repertory Theatre, The Guthrie and The National Black Theatre, as well as opera and dance credits; and Sound Designer Robertson Witmer, whose work was heard in Tantrum’s production of “Dancing at Lughnasa” last summer. Witmer will also perform the production’s live music.

Bringing to life the myriad characters in “Into the West” are Greg Jackson, Blake Segal and Turna Mete. Jackson joins Tantrum after a recent run in the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.” Segal’s credits include the national tour of “Mary Poppins” and productions at The Old Globe, Yale Repertory Theatre, PlayMakers Repertory Company and the Philadelphia Theatre Company, where he was nominated for a Barrymore Award. Mete, an Ohio native, has performed Off-Broadway and regionally, and in the films “Hiding in the Open” and “How He Fell in Love,” along with Hulu’s “Deadbeat.”

Performance Schedule: “Into the West,” by Greg Banks, from the screenplay by Jim Sheridan. Music by Thomas Johnson; directed by Jen Wineman.
