Women's & Gender Studies in Paris

This year's Paris study group was an amazing experience! ( Read Dr. Grant's blog: Dr. J's Deep Thought.) The information below concerns the 2009 program; it will be updated soon. In the meantime, you may contact the WGS Administrative Assistant for information.

The relevance of France to theories of feminism dates at least as far back as the French revolution of 1789. In fact it can be argued that feminism could never exist at all were it not for the development of democracy in France.

In its current incarnation, the French feminist synthesis of existentialist, post-structuralist and Lacanian psychoanalytic theories marks it as fundamentally distinct from its British or American counterparts.

Students will benefit from reading several major texts of French feminism while immersing themselves in the history, cultural context, and artistic experiences that formed the basis for the origins and development of these theories

Students will spend each morning studying and critically evaluating the assigned reading material and preparing to understand it in terms of the day's excursion.
