Office of Education Abroad Photo Contest Open House

Each year, the Office of Education Abroad sponsors an International Photography Contest open to students, faculty, staff and alumni. This year, students and staff submitted photos from Malaysia to Mexico. They captured some of the most memorable faces and places that they have experienced. A portion of the photos will be on display at Court Street Coffee leading up to and during International Week. The variety of locations represented is testament to the wealth of international experience that Ohio University students and staff possess.
Keynote Address – Koko Kondo
7pm, Baker University Center Ballroom
August 6, 1945. It’s a day that may or may not ring any bells instantly if you aren’t a history buff. Newspapers quickly deemed it “the day the sun rose twice.” It was the day the United States retaliated upon Japan for the Pearl Harbor attack, by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Some of us weren’t alive, some were too young to know what was going on, and some had their lives changed forever.
Koko Kondo is the youngest survivor of the Hiroshima bomb. Koko was 8 months old when the bomb was dropped and her world was changed. She survived the bombing unharmed physically but saw the effects first-hand. Her father, a priest, worked with “Hiroshima Maidens,” women disfigured by the bombs and she saw how the bombings affected her community. This instilled a rage within her until one day; she came face to face with the man who dropped the bomb on a US television show.
Koko Kondo now works to spread the word of peace and speak out against war all over the world. She highlights the evils of war and power of forgiveness as she offers a firsthand experience to the horrific tragedy that has helped guide her life.
