How to Apply

Students from all disciplines will be considered for admission into the MSES program. Some students may need to take additional coursework as a prerequisite to their chosen program of graduate study.

The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for applicants whose native language is not English (600 on TOEFL or 250 on computer graded test). Graduate Writing Exam (GWE) scores of 50 or better are highly recommended. Scores on standardized tests such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are recommended but not required.

Deadlines for applying are January 1 for fall quarter, October 1 for winter quarter, and February 1 for spring quarter.

*To be considered for financial aid, submit your application by January 1 of the academic year preceding admission.

To apply to the interdisciplinary environmental studies graduate program, send to the Office of Graduate Studies:

  • A transcript of undergraduate and all other post secondary coursework. The minimum undergraduate grade point average (g.p.a.) necessary for unconditional admission is 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Some students with a g.p.a. between 2.6 and 3.0 may be admitted on conditional status, and they must achieve a g.p.a. of 3.0 in their first 15 hours of graduate coursework.
  • A completed admission form with nonrefundable application fee.
    Application fee structure:
    • Initial/first degree* $45 *includes dual MBA/MSA
    • Non-Degree $35
    • Second degree $25
    • Reapplication $25

Please also send to the Environmental Studies program:

  • A cover letter to the director of the program outlining your academic background, skills and environmental interests. A personal interview or electronic correspondence is desirable but not required.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Clearly indicate which one or two of the five curriculum concentration areas most interest you (Life Sciences, Physical and Earth Sciences, Environmental Policy and Planning, Environmental Monitoring, or Environmental Archaeology), and why.
  • List three Ohio University faculty members whose research areas appear to be closest to your environmental research interests. (faculty)
