Application Requirements For Graduate Study

All the forms for M.S. and Ph.D. applications are online at:

http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/

Please note that Yahoo email blocks emails received from the online application system, so you will not receive emails that, for example, confirm your submission of the online application.  If you plan to use the online application system, please use something other than a Yahoo account as your email address, and please inform anyone who will be writing reference letters for you and who will do so using the online system to use something other than a Yahoo account as their email address.

For international applicants, we require the TOEFL or IELTS (with some exemptions as discussed below). The minimum TOEFL score for admission to Chemical Engineering is 550 (paper-based) or 81 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score for admission to Chemical Engineering is 7.0 across all bands with no individual score less than 6.5. In general, if you do not submit TOEFL or IELTS results as part of your application, you must be tested when you arrive on campus. If you do not meet our admission standards at that time, you must enroll in English classes, which may delay progress towards degree and reduce your financial assistance. If you do not exceed the university minimum scores, you cannot enter the degree program, and you must take English classes at your own expense.

TOEFL/IELTS exemptions:  native speakers of English with a bachelors or graduate degree from an English-medium university in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, or New Zealand need not provide TOEFL/IELTS scores with their application and need not take the TOEFL/IELTS exam upon arrival. Effective June 2006, applicants from predominantly English-speaking countries with a bachelors or graduate degree from an English-medium university need not provide TOEFL/IELTS scores with their applications, even if English is not their first language, but they must take the TOEFL/IELTS upon arrival if they did not submit official scores with the application.

The GRE General Exam is recommended for everyone and is required unless you have a B.S. in chemical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Your undergraduate (and M.S.) academic importance is important. Typically, we require at least a "B" (3.0/4.0) average or the equivalent for admission. We have higher standards for applicants without a chemical engineering degree, and typically higher grades are necessary to be competitive for financial assistance. The Office of Graduate Studies knows how to equivalence grades from universities abroad to our grading system. We rely on them to do so. Therefore, we MUST have an official application complete with certified transcripts to make a decision on admission or financial assistance.

Occasionally, someone with below-standard academic performance qualifies for graduate admission based on significant experience after graduation. If this sounds like you, please contact our graduate chair (Dr. Daniel Gulino) or a faculty member in your area of research interest directly.

We invite inquiries from potential students with a sincere interest in our research focus areas: (1) Bioengineering, (2) Energy and the Environment, and (3) Inorganic Materials. However, we cannot make admission decisions without an official application. Please don't ask us to do so.

There is no required form for recommendation letters. Electronic letters of recommendation are only accepted via the official Ohio University online system available with the online application.

We offer both an M.S. and a Ph.D. program. If you have an M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely-related field, you should apply for the Ph.D. program. If you do not already have an M.S. degree in chemical engineering or a closely related field, you may apply either to the M.S. or Ph.D. program. To be accepted to the Ph.D. program without an M.S. in chemical engineering or a closely related field, you typically must meet all of the three following criteria:

  1. A score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) quantitative section of 700 or higher, or a GPA of 3.3/4.0 or higher from an ABET-accredited chemical engineering program

  2. Except for native speakers of English, a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exceeding 590 (paper-based) or 96 (internet-based), or the equivalent as defined by the university

  3. An undergraduate GPA in chemical engineering of at least 3.0/4.0 or equivalent as determined by the university.

Students who are initially accepted to the M.S. program and perform well may request to switch directly to the Ph.D. program at the end of their first year.
