Biofuels Research Laboratory
Researchers focus on the cultivation and processing of algae grown on atmospheric and industrial carbon dioxide. The harvested algae can then be processed for oil extraction, or subjected to gasification and Fischer-Tropsch reforming to produce a variety of transportation fuels including synthetic gasoline, diesel, and aviation (jet) fuel. Additional projects seek to recycle waste grease from the food-service industry or use virgin crops such as sunflowers as a source of biodiesel. For more information, contact Ben Stuart, director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment.
