Recycling competition underway in OHIO’s residence halls

Ohio University’s Recycling Battle Royale is a four-week recycling competition between each residence hall to see which can recycle the highest percentage of their total waste. Beginning Monday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 23, every on-campus student will have the opportunity to learn about recycling while helping their residence hall rise to the top. 

The winning residence hall will be determined by their overall recycling rate based on weights provided by the Athens-Hocking Recycling Center. The winners will get a pizza party in their residence hall sponsored by Campus Recycling(opens in a new window) and Housing and Residence Life(opens in a new window).  

The goal of this event is to engage with students and help those living in the residence halls understand how and why to recycle. Students can also learn more about what OHIO’s recycling goals are and how they can help achieve them. Grace Mealey, a member of Campus Recycling’s communications team, said this event is a “good way to get the residence halls together to do something good for the environment.” 

Students will keep up to date on who is winning based on weekly displays on the televisions in their residence halls. They can also stay updated by following Campus Recycling’s Instagram @ohiocampusrecycling.

“Recycling is one of the simplest ways to make sustainable choices while simultaneously helping Ohio University reach our 80 percent waste recovery goal. The competition aspect of this event provides opportunity for students to establish new recycling habits and help build our culture of recycling on campus,” said Andrew Ladd, recycling and refuse manager at Campus Recycling.
