Bob Moran Symposium speaker Greg Lee to discuss race in American media Feb. 20
Greg Lee, managing editor with The Athletic in Washington D.C., will visit Ohio University at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Schoonover Center 145 as a part of Ohio University’s “90 Minutes Series.”
Lee, the keynote speaker for the annual OHIO Bob Moran Symposium will sit down with student moderator Anthony Poisal to discuss race in American media. He will also take questions from the audience after his lecture.
Lee has enjoyed a celebrated career as a sports journalist and has served as a senior editor at The Boston Globe, South Florida Sun Sentinel, The Washington Post and NBA.com. But more than being an editor, he has been a leader in focusing attention on diversity, gender and inclusion. He is also a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Moran was one of the first black sports journalists to graduate from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in 1974. He covered Arizona State athletics for the East Valley (Arizona) Tribune from 1987 to 2004. He died in 2008 after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer.
He covered every Arizona State vs. University of Arizona football game from 1975 until 2003. After his death, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona posthumously honored him by naming the Most Valuable Player award of their annual rivalry game the Bob Moran MVP Award.
The aim of the “90 Minutes Series” is to create discussions about politics, racism, sexism, and other global topics. The events expose attendees to people who have faced adversity or who have seen discrimination happen to others and stepped forward to address those issues.

Mat dos Santos, executive director of the Oregon ACLU, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in Schoonover 145. He will talk about the death of a Portland teenager at the business end of a cop’s gun. In coming to Athens, dos Santos will show how pervasive such killings are in America. While dos Santos can’t promise any concrete answers, he can speak to the fears that follow black and Hispanic males when their worlds collide with police. (Interviewer: Tee Willis)
The Women in the Workplace Lecture (date TBD) will include perspectives from numerous women in the work field. This “90 Minutes” series will focus on four women who have found success in the workplace. A panel of women will discuss how they went from college to the workplace and succeeded there. They also will talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of trying to carve a niche for themselves in professions that white males continue to dominate. (Interviewer: Delaney Murray)
