January 22, 2015 : OUL Student Designs and Builds Set for Upcoming Play

Lancaster – For the first time since Victor Jones became the director of OUL Theatre in 2010, a student is designing and building the set for an upcoming production. Set design is normally something Jones handles himself, but Student Jesse Cunningham is the set designer for the upcoming production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

“Jesse is a wonderful student,” said Jones.  “I know he will do a fantastic job with this set.”

“When Victor Jones  asked me to design and build the set, I was honored and scared at the same time,” said Cunningham. “This is the first time he’s let a student design the set.  Up until this point, he’s done it all.”

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy and promises to be fun for all who attend because it also involves audience participation. It examines the personal lives, triumphs and struggles of a group of teenagers preparing for their annual spelling bee.

“The set I have designed is made to look like a high school gymnasium where a spelling bee would take place,” said Cunningham. “I’ve really worked hard to make this set my own.”

Cunningham has been involved in about 10 OUL productions in his time as a student.  He is graduating in May with a degree in Electronic Media.

“I’ve been on stage and behind-the-scenes,” said Cunningham. “I’m moving in more of a behind-the-scenes direction. I would like to find a way to do this kind of set design work after I graduate.”

Cunningham hopes all who attend enjoy the set and the show.  The show will run April 17–26.
