August 28, 2019 : Career Workshops Scheduled for Fall Semester

by Sarah Shy

FallWorkshopsGraduation can be an exciting and scary time for students. After graduation, job searching and interviewing begins, and many students might feel a bit overwhelmed or nervous about stepping on this new path. Ohio University Lancaster is here to help students get the training, experience, and knowledge they will need to start their journey into a career they want.

Throughout Fall semester 2019, students will have opportunities to attend career workshops and gain information and experience they’ll need when looking for the right career.

“Attendance at workshops is going to be very beneficial for students to start the path to their career development journey. The Handshake workshops are a great opportunity to learn more about this new system, and the earlier in the semester the better, so students can schedule appointments and check for upcoming events.” said Brandy Bailey, Ohio University Lancaster's Career Coach.

September 5th, (9AM-10AM) and September 9th, (3PM and 4PM) will be the Handshake Crash Course workshop. Students that attend this workshop will gain some introductory knowledge about Handshake, which is Ohio University’s career services platform. They will learn how to search for jobs, set up profiles, create connections, register for events, and make appointments with their career coach. Faculty are also welcome to attend this workshop to learn more about Handshake and how to assist students.

September 25th, (11AM-12PM) will be the Prepare Your Wear workshop. This workshop explores the do’s and don’ts of interview dress and students will learn the difference between business casual and business professional.

“On September 27th, Fairfield County Job and Family Services is hosting a job fair on our campus, so Prepare Your Wear is a way to feel confident going into the job fair and meeting with employers looking your best!” said Bailey.

October 1st, (2PM-3PM) will be the Creating the Perfect Resume and Cover Letter workshop. This workshop offers general tips and tricks about the development of professional documents, how to personalize them to fit a unique style, and increase understanding of content that should or should not be included in a resume and cover letter.

October 28th, (10AM-11AM) students can attend the Job Search and Interviewing workshop. This is a great workshop that demystifies the job search process and prepares students for jobs and interviews. Students learn how to create a job search plan and understand how to better prepare before, during, and after an interview.

November 14th, (10:30AM-11AM) will be the Keys to Networking Success workshop. Students attending this workshop will gain an overview or networking basics, including opportunities through Handshake, LinkedIn, and Bobcat Mentorship Network. There will also be the opportunity to develop an “elevator pitch” which students will learn about at the workshop.

“The last 3 workshops of the semester (Resume and Cover Letter, Job Search and Interviewing, and Networking) count toward the completion of the Career Readiness Training Program through Ohio University and the Career and Leadership Development Center. Along with the three workshops, a student also needs to complete a career coaching session and a mock interview session to receive a letter of completion.” said Bailey.

Outside of workshops, Brandy Bailey will be available for career coaching and mock interviews. These are thirty-minutes sessions that give students a way to explore anything on their mind that’s related to career development. Faculty can also take advantage of these workshops during their class sessions, or can opt for a 15 minute Career Services overview for students.

“This can be choosing a major, exploring career interests, resume and cover letter review, and preparing for an upcoming job or grad school interview.” said Bailey.

Getting a job after graduation can be tricky, so don’t miss out on these great workshops and opportunities to prepare for the task of finding the right career.

All workshops will be held in room 414 Brasee Hall. You can pre-register beforehand or just show up to the workshop on the day and time listed.
