OHIO community comes together to support those affected by Carriage Hill fire

After a fire destroyed one building in an off-campus apartment complex Sunday night, the Ohio University community is coming together to support those whose lives have been affected.

Nearly 60 residents, including some OHIO students, faculty and staff, have been displaced as a result of the fire at Carriage Hill Apartments. Baker University Center was kept open Sunday night to serve as a gathering and warming area with food and drinks while shuttle services provided by the University transported residents between Carriage Hill and Baker Center.

Within hours of learning about the fire, students, faculty and staff began mobilizing to assist fellow Bobcats and community members who were affected, collecting donations and offering support.

“I am so proud to see the community response and hard work of many individuals through the night to assist others affected by the Carriage Hill fire,” said Jason Pina, Vice President for Student Affairs. “This is a true example of how our Bobcat family cares for one another – and cares for the Athens community.”

The Division of Student Affairs is working to provide students, faculty and staff affected by the fire with housing and meal plans, as well as a $100 Walmart gift card to replace necessary items. Those who may have stayed with family or friends Sunday night are reminded that resources are available by visiting the Dean of Students office in Baker Center 345 or calling 740-593-1800.

In addition, the Dean of Students office is offering an open house on Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 2-4 p.m. in Baker Center 242 for students to seek out resources that may be beneficial to them.

International students should contact International Student and Faculty Services to receive assistance with contacting their consular representative to replace visas and other documentation.

The University is also collecting donations for those affected by the fire. Clothing and material donations may be dropped off at the 1804 Lounge in Baker University Center through the day on Monday, Feb. 27. To make a monetary donation, please visit www.ohio.edu/give. Choose “Make a one-time gift,” then select “Ohio Parents and Family Endowment” from the dropdown menu. All donations made to that account this week will go directly to the students, faculty and staff affected by the fire.

To donate to community members affected by the fire, contact the American Red Cross of Southeast Ohio by calling 740-593-5273 or visiting www.redcross.org.
