Biography
Dr. Francine C. Childs is a Professor Emerita in the Department African American Studies at Ohio University. For the past thirty-five years, she has served in various capacities. Among them were the chair of curriculum (1974-1996), Director of summer programs (1975-1978). She also served as chairperson of the Department between 1984-1989.She has received appointments to Human Relations Councils, Religious Boards, Criminal Justice Committees, and National Professional Associations such as the Society of Ethnic & Special Studies, the Ntaional Black Family Conference, the Ohio State NAACP Convention & Public School Districts.
Dr. Childs has conducted workshops for the Ohio Baptists General Assembly; Hocking Valley School of the Bible, and other Church and Professional groups. Counseling. and helping at-risk youth surmount their obstacles to success. Professor Childs is active in recruiting, and working with area youth groups. Due to Dr. Childs love for children, she often serves as a motivational speaker for area Elementary, High School and College programs . Professor Childs started Imani, a Saturday School for African American youngsters, as a laboratory for her (AAS 440) Black Child Class in 1991.
In 1996, Dr.Childs received an Ohio University Phenomenal Woman award. In 1995 she was appointed as the Higher Education Commission's representative for the National Alliance of Black School Educa tors White House Task Force on Education. During the same year, Dr. Childs was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award for out-of-class involvement with students. In 1997 Professor Childs received the National Alliance of Black School Educators Marcus K. Foster award for outstanding contributions to the enlightment, and Education of Black & other Ethnic Minority Children. While in 1992 Childs received the National Council of Black Studies Anna Julia Cooper Presidential Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Service in the African Global Community and Contributions to the promotion and Development of Black Studies. Dr. Childs was a Fulbright Scholar to India in 1986, where she studied Gandhi's theories and Practices of Nonviolence, and Resolving Conflict Nonviolently.
Research Interests
A researcher, an advocate of Lifelong Learning, Adolescent Peproductive Health Care, a promoter of Cultural Diversity and has written several publications on culture, single parenting, teenage pregnancy lifelong learning and urban education

Dr. Childs is the author of "A National Analysis of Problems Encountered by the Socially Disadvantaged in the Family, An Educational Sociology" Monogram of East Texas State University Commerce, TX;Quality Education Can It Be Achieved" Journal of Ethnic and Special Studies ; "Black Women's Role in Bringing About Educational Change"Journal of Confrontation; and "America at the Crossroads" the Ohio University Post. Professor Childs is completing two major works "Training For Reigning: What Every Nation Should Know About It's Children", and "Afrocentric Intervention Technique For Adolescent Pregnancy."
