March 19, 2015 : VIDEO: Health Services Administration and History Bachelor’s Degrees Featured on OUL TV Program

Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – Two bachelor’s degree programs that can be completed at Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington were featured on this month’s edition of the television program “Fairfield Today at OUL.”  Professors from the Health Services Administration program and the History program, along with their students, were interviewed for the program.

Health Services Program Coordinator Susan Shea said the degree is growing in popularity now that health care is changing.

“Traditional healthcare has changed. It used to be that people like myself, who was a clinician, got into the supervisory side of things.  I didn’t have all that business background,” said Shea. “Now they’re looking for people to start with the administration background and degree.”

Health Services Administration Major Mason McGrew believes the range of skills you learn in the degree program makes you a better job candidate upon graduation.

“There are accounting classes, management classes and marketing classes,” said McGrew. “It is very-well rounded and is a great degree.”

“This is a preparatory program to give students the knowledge and the skills to be able to work in a health care setting.  We’re finding with the changes in health care and health care reform that they are looking for people who have this background and business understanding,” said Shea.

Shea said that students get jobs at hospitals, physician offices and physician clinics as well as other health care facilities when they graduate.  McGrew is minoring in math and thinks he’ll end up working on the financial side of health care.

History Major Cathy Pate said she might like to get a job in a library when she graduates.  However, she’s not 100 percent sure about that yet.

“I find that I really enjoy American History,” said Pate. “I learned that during the 60’s there were women who stood up, and I have opportunities because of those women.  I really appreciate that.”

Assistant Professor of History Mark Nevin said there are many jobs students can get after graduating with a history degree at OUL.  The job options include library work, as well as museum positions and education jobs.  Nevin said the degree is also great preparation for law school or working in government.

“Our courses stress critical thinking and effective writing. Those are good skills to have for any career,” said Nevin. “The History degree is really broad-based.  You can take classes in American History, European History and World History. One of the other exciting things we have is an opportunity to do internships.  We have a number of students who have completed internships at Fairfield Heritage Association and have done things like lead tours and archival work.”
