Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster's Athletic Director has been awarded the 2013 Commitment Award from the Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The award is given annually at the Celebration of Possibilities banquet to honor those in the community who help those with developmental disabilities.
Whitehead was given the award on Thursday, March 28 during the banquet at Crossroads Event Center in Lancaster. Whitehead has played an integral role in solidifying the relationship between a number of university programs and Fairfield DD. He was selected for the award because of his role with The Zone. The Zone is the food service operation that Fairfield DD operates on the Lancaster Campus and clients of Fairfield DD are employed there.
"The partnership works because both organizations are a lot alike," said Whitehead. "We both work with young men and women to develop their skills and if I do a small part to help those with developmental disabilities along, I am the one that is grateful."
"All of our awards are based on helping us to advance our mission, which is to bring about a vibrant community where people lead fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions," said John Bosser, Fairfield DD community outreach coordinator. "Jeff is the perfect example of making that happen. He goes out of his way to ensure that the guys and gals who work at The Zone fit into the campus community. They truly feel as if they are a part of the OUL staff. And the staff and students view them the same way."
Whitehead has also opened the doors for the "No Limits Basketball Camp." The annual event is an inclusive skills camp for kids with and without disabilities on the Lancaster Campus.
Whitehead was nominated for the award by the manager of The Zone, Kathy Dennison. Dennison received the Distinguished Service Award at the 2012 Celebration of Possibilities.
Whitehead was honored along with several others at the Celebration of Possibilities banquet. The awards judging panel included Fairfield DD staff members, former award winners and volunteers from the community.
