Next spring, Ohio University’s Russ College will welcome aspiring civil engineers from around Ohio, Kentucky and western Pennsylvania to create for good at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2018 Ohio Valley Student Conference (OVSC).

Held April 12-14, the event – expected to bring more than 350 students from 15 schools to OHIO -- will include multiple design and construction competitions, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the field of civil engineering. Industry professionals will serve as judges, mentors and volunteers, enabling students to connect and network with experts.

Senior civil engineering major Robert Parker, also an Engineering Ambassador, is ASCE’s planning committee chairman.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to see how their programs are designed specifically for their major, and how every one of those components in every class can be then implemented in these competitions,” said Parker, who also will serve as a judge.

Students will compete in balsa wood bridge, civil site design, concrete bat, concrete canoe, environmental, geotechnical, steel bridge, surveying and technical paper contests. The events will take place at various locations, with the steel bridge event set for the OHIO indoor tennis courts and the concrete canoe event set for Lake Snowden in Albany, Ohio.

Local junior high and high school students also are expected to participate.
