Akron-Wayne men hold off OHIO Eastern 101-99
The Akron-Wayne Warriors escaped St. Clairsville with a hard-fought two point victory over the Panthers Wednesday night. The Warriors came out strong and jumped out to a 52-26 lead with 5:15 remaining in the first half before the Panthers went on a 22-5 run to close out the first half. OUE continued the momentum in the second half and cut the lead to 101-99 with 8 seconds remaining on a Jay Farrow bonus bomb from the wing. Akron power forward Dejuan Lawrence was promptly fouled and the bruiser missed the front end of the one and one and OUE grabbed the rebound and had the final shot for the win but Farrow’s jumper would not fall as time expired.
Lawrence led Akron with 28 points and 14 rebounds. C.J. Waters added 20, Justin Carroll 18, and Ted King 17 for the winners. Farrow led OUE and all scorers with 37 points. Cambridge alum Connor Leppla added 16 points and 8 boards. Austin Coleman chipped in with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Monroe Central’s Dusty Graham scored 10 points.
OUE falls to 3-1 overall. Akron improved to 4-1.
Akron-Wayne women nip OHIO Eastern 68-61
Akron-Wayne came back from a 35-30 halftime deficit and pulled away late in a 68-61 road win. OUE was led by the Buckeye Local duo of Becky Zeroski and Alaire Destifanes. Zeroski finished with a game high 25 points and Destifanes added 16. St. John grad Kaylin Nixon finished by 14 points and 4 rebounds. Akron was led by Ally Echlinger with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
OUE falls to 1-2 on the season. Akron improved to 3-2.
