iCUE Spotlight: Jan. 8-15, 2018

It's the first iCUE Spotlight of 2018! The weather outside still may be frightful but ready or not, we're heading into spring semester! There's a lot to do during this final week of winter intersession: International student orientation opens today, new undergraduate student orientation and residence hall move in starts on Thursday and classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 16!

To keep up with all of the important deadlines and what's happening on campus, be sure to visit the OHIO Calendar of University Events (CUE). It's the university's OFFICIAL calandar and contains all of the important dates and deadlines from the Academic Calendar. In addition, anyone with an OHIO ID can add events that are sponsored by any university planning unit or registered student organization.

Here's a glimpse of what's going on:

Martin Luther King Jr Celebration (Jan. 8-31, Athens Campus): Ohio University will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Athens Campus throughout the month of January. This week's highlights include:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. poster contest: All OHIO students, as well as local middle school and high school students, are encouraged to submit an original poster that incorporates the ideas of justice, protests, respect, freedom or equality (both text and images should be used). Completed posters are due by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11 and three cash prizes will be awarded!
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday observed: All OHIO campuses and centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of the holiday.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Silent March: The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Silent March will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15 in front of Galbreath Chapel and end at the fourth-floor entrance of Baker University Center. All members of the local community are welcome and marchers are encouraged to bring a civil rights sign.
  • MLK Jr. Celebratory Brunch: The annual brunch will follow the Silent March and will include a keynote speech by University of Missouri Associate Professor of Education Ty-Ron Douglas. Please note: Childcare will be available from OHIO early childhood education majors from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service: The MLK Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 15, is an opportunity for campus and community participants to volunteer in service projects throughout Athens County.

Nicole J Phillips presents Kindness in the Workplace (Wednesday, Jan. 10, 1:30-3 p.m., Walter Hall Rotunda): Author and speaker Nicole Phillips will address the university community. This free professional development opportunity is sponsored by Classified Senate and is open to all OHIO employees - classified and administrative staff and faculty! Copies of her book, "Kindness is Contagious," will be available for sale as well.

OHIO Hockey vs. Iowa State (Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13, 7:30 p.m., Bird Arena): OHIO Hockey has a busy weekend, playing Iowa State on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets can be purchased in the Bird Arena Pro Shop and online. And attendees at Saturday's game will have a chance to hit the ice for themselves at Bird Arena's post-game Midnight Meltdown!
