Ohio University Southern pays tribute to veterans

IRONTON, Ohio – Community members gathered Thursday in Bowman Auditorium at Ohio University Southern to honor all military veterans who served, both in times of war and peace.

The Paul G. Blazer High School Junior ROTC, led by Command Sgt. Maj. Paul Royster, presented colors for the ceremony. Both the Ironton High School Varsity Singers, under the direction of Kathy Price, and the Lawrence County Ecumenical Choir, under the direction of Sharon Bradshaw, performed patriotic songs for the audience.

Joslyn Snyder, keynote speaker at the Ninth Annual Honorable Frank J. McCown Lecture Series, spoke about sacrifice. Snyder – an Air Force veteran, a combat veteran’s spouse and a nurse at the VA Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia – has experienced the sacrifice of military service from all perspectives.

“Sacrifice,” Snyder said, “is giving something up for a higher cause, and it’s not just our soldiers who sacrifice. We must remember the pain of both veterans and their families.”

Snyder recounted very personal stories of being in the military herself. She also spoke about being supportive of her husband while he was oversees and after he came home. She also described the difficulty of military service on small children. “Sacrifice is not a word [my] 4- and 6-year-old understood, but they were born into it.”

“Sacrifice binds all veterans and their families,” Snyder said.

The Annual Honorable Frank J. McCown Lecture Series recognizes veterans annually. The series was established in honor of this common pleas judge who died of leukemia on May 16, 2007. McCown taught at Ohio University Southern from 1974-2006, was an integral part of the community and held great adoration and honor of all veterans.
