The Ohio University Alumni Association (OUAA) will host Gospel Voices of Faith’s (GVF) 40th anniversary celebration during OUAA’s upcoming inaugural On the Green Weekend. The weekend events begin Thursday, May 29 and ends Sunday, June 1. On The Green Weekend welcomes Ohio University alumni and friends and the Athens community to campus during one of the most beautiful times of the year. This “spring homecoming” event emphasizes academics and the arts.
Gospel Voices of Faith was founded by six Ohio University students who wanted to worship God through song. Their first performance was in 1975, the same year the group became an official university organization.
Former GVF members will spend the weekend reconnecting, rehearsing and entertaining. A benefit concert will be held on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church at 2 South College Street. The event is a fundraiser for OHIO’s Urban Scholars Program. The organization’s long-time advisor Francine Childs, Ph.D., invites everyone to Grace Christian Center at 9322 Johnson Road in nearby The Plains, OH for Sunday morning worship at 10 a.m.
Kelly Davidson, academic advisor in OHIO’s The Patton College of Education and former GVF member, helped to coordinate the celebration and said formerly about 50 or 60 members and their families participated in events. She expects a similar turnout this year.
“Our advisor, Dr. Francine Childs, challenged us to live the life we sang about,” she says. “It was more than a student organization. Gospel Voices of Faith was a family.”
