Glidden Professor to present 'Storytelling in a Diverse and Changing World'

Thomas Costello Jr. will present "Storytelling in a Diverse and Changing World" for the January Third Thursday event. The free program will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at Ohio University Zanesville on Newark Road.

In his program Costello, the Ohio University Glidden Visiting Professor for the 2013-14 academic year, will offer new insight to multicultural dialogue, inclusion and social justice.

A 1975 cum laude graduate of Ohio University and the University College with a bachelor in general studies degree, Costello earned his juris doctorate in 1978 from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He has lectured on issues of intergroup dialogue, cultural competency, civil rights and social justice issues.  

Since 2009, Costello has served Ohio University as a member of its Diversity Alumni Advisory Board (DAAB) and is currently its chair. The DAAB's mission is to connect, inform and serve the University community through strong leadership, dynamic programs and effective communication that integrate diversity and inclusion initiatives into the daily policies, practices, curricula and programs at Ohio University. He has served as a resource to the University faculty and staff on issues of diversity, access and equity.

Costello has served as the leader of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, a 73-year-old human rights and civil justice organization based in Detroit. Prior to joining the Michigan Roundtable, Costello served as general counsel of Compuware Corporation, a worldwide provider of information technology and services. He served in that role for 24 years. In addition to his position as general counsel, he served as senior vice president of human resources and secretary of the company.

As the president of the Michigan Roundtable, he has grown the organization both in staff and funding as well as increased the scope of the organization's work to include equity work across the state of Michigan. In his role with the Michigan Roundtable, Costello has spoken at conferences and workshops, and written articles on issues of human rights and social justice.
