Explore East Africa: Learn Swahili
This four-week intensive Swahili language program will take 20 students on a journey to explore East Africa. The program will integrate culture and content to help students gain Swahili language skills. Interactive classroom instructions will take place Mondays to Thursdays, and Fridays students will take instructional field trips to The Wilds, Hocking Hills and around the Athens vicinity.
The participants, who can be either undergraduate or college ready high school students, will enroll in either elementary or intermediate classes for a total of 108 hours of instruction. Learning experiences will help students develop linguistic and cultural competence and prepare them for a visit to East Africa.
At the end of the program, students will earn four semester hours of college credit, and students in the Elementary class will be able to perform at the Novice Mid proficiency level, while students in the Intermediate class will be able to perform at the Novice High/Intermediate Low levels according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.
