A strong supply of primary care physicians results in improved overall health in our communities.
Within a decade, experts predict a shortage of more than 45,000 primary care physicians. The shortage in health professionals is expected to intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for health care grows. The State of Ohio is not immune. Already, urban and rural areas alike are short on medical professionals and long on under- or uninsured residents.
OHIO, medical education and health care.
Since 1975, the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine has educated physicians committed to practicing in Ohio, with an emphasis on primary care. In fact, no other medical school in the state is better prepared to educate primary care physicians for Ohio.
Ohio University has become a model for medical education and serving underserved communities, and one of the leading osteopathic research institutions in the nation. The students, faculty, alumni and other friends are vital to the University’s successes.
Our vision is ambitious, requiring a substantial investment of time and resources. The investment began with transformational gifts that have resulted in the opening of new campuses in central and northeast Ohio. But this is only the beginning.
Why? To Lead...
... in delivering primary care to the citizens of Ohio, setting a national example for others to emulate.
... with the kind of medical care that treats a patient as a whole person, not a diagnosis or problem
.... in providing the best generalist medical training for future physician specialists.
... research and discovery that will drive innovation and excellence in medicine.
... advances in medical education that align with patient-centered, high-value care.
... health care partnerships that improve quality of life for individuals, their families and, our communities.
... in promoting teams of health care professionals who work together to
care for YOU.
