ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 3, 2012) -- Renée A. Middleton, dean of Ohio University's Patton College of Education, has been elected to serve as one of eight at-large members of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). She joins 23 other education leaders from across the nation charged with governance of this pivotal organization.
"Renée Middleton is a versatile leader among the AACTE membership and a dedicated advocate in the educator preparation and PK-12 communities," said Sharon P. Robinson, Ed.D., president and CEO of AACTE. "Renée has long been an active participant in the AACTE Annual Meeting and Day on the Hill events. She is a valued member of our Committee on Research and Dissemination, and she helps to develop and organize curriculum for the AACTE Leadership Academy. We look forward to the energy, passion and guidance Renée will bring to the AACTE Board of Directors."
Middleton's election to the AACTE board reflects recognition of the strong leadership she has provided to Ohio's teacher preparation programs through her work as a member and elected leader of the State University Education Deans and various statewide panels and task forces.Her significant contributions to the Patton College include oversight of a major restructuring effort, program evaluations resulting in increased prominence of both graduate and undergraduate programs, expansions of a variety of school-university partnerships and other numerous initiatives.
"We have the opportunity to have an impact on designing the future of education." Middleton said. "Our membership must be unified in facing challenges and opportunities and we must advocate, collaborate, transform, design and take action to sustain and strengthen the system of public common schools. I am honored to be working with the AACTE to accomplish these goals."
As a board member, Middleton will participate in semi-annual deliberations regarding the organization's policies and finances. The board's responsibilities include providing insight on professional issues such as developing the education workforce and strengthening the programs of AACTE member institutions; helping to shape the AACTE's work on accountability and other policy matters; and overseeing the yearly budget and annual audit, among others.
With 800 institutional members, AACTE is a national alliance dedicated to promoting the highest quality professional development of teachers and school leaders in order to enhance PK-12 student learning. Its history of advocacy, leadership and service on behalf of the professional development of educators positions the organization to provide the most definitive voice in the United States on matters relating to the preparation of school personnel.
