In addition to attending classes taught by OHIO and local instructors, students in the program will make a number of group trips to sites in Austria and Germany and will take weekly field trips to significant and interesting sites throughout the city and province of Salzburg. Students also have the option to travel independently on the weekends.

Eligibility and selection process

The program is primarily designed for Elementary (1000 series) and Intermediate (2000 series) students, but is open as well to students at Advanced levels (3000 series and above).

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in and successfully complete a Fall Semester German course, and, if accepted, during the second half of Fall Semester be enrolled in ML 2491 (a program orientation course).

Selection to the program will be based on the student's academic and judicial record, the student's performance in her/his current German course, an interview with the program director, letters of recommendations, and the compatibility of group proficiency levels. Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

This program does not accept Non-Ohio University students.

Living arrangements

Students live together in a modern Austrian dormitory in doubles or triples with a private toilet and shower. The dorm is located conveniently on a bus route to the university, the town-center, and the train station. A number of supermarkets, restaurants, fitness opportunities, and a shopping center are within a short walking distance.

If accepted, all students must be enrolled in and successfully complete a Fall semester German course and ML 2491 during the second half of Fall Semester. (This course will be added to your schedule by instructor permission after you have accepted your nomination to the program.)

Highlights

In recent years, program highlights, in addition to our tours of the many sites in Salzburg, have included viewings of local theater performances and film screenings, a visit to the former concentration camp in Mauthausen, an excursion to a former STASI prison in Berlin, a long climb up the St. Peter church tower overlooking the Glockenspiel in Munich, visits to soccer matches with the powerhouse Red Bulls of Salzburg, and a hike up the Gaisberg mountain.  Located in the heart of Europe and the Alps, Salzburg has been a convenient departure point for student travels on the weekends: many have gone skiing and hiking in Austria, and others have traveled across Europe, with popular destinations including Prague, Budapest, Venice, Rome, Florence, Amsterdam, Nürnberg, Berlin, London, Dublin, and Paris.

Entry and exit requirements

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States.  If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now.

Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country.   Please review the entry and exit requirements for Austria. US citizens will not need a visa or other special documents to enter the country for the length of this program. (Please note: If you plan to travel before or after the program, you may need a visa).  You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country.
