| | | Service-learning in Honduras
The Service Learning in Honduras study abroad program includes 2 weeks in Honduras during the month of June 2008. It is sponsored by the Higher Education Program and is directed by Peter Mather (Counseling and Higher Education).
The program will be of interest to students who are interested in higher education administration, international development, and Latin American culture studies. Students will not only 'do' service learning, but will learn about the pedagogy and practice of service learning. In addition, students will gain an understanding of how the educational system in Honduras serves the economic and social development needs of the Honduran people.
The program will include a service-learning experience in the Agalta Valley (rural Honduras), as well as visits to NGOs and institutions of higher education in two major cities: Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.
Program length Summer Two weeks in country, followed by independent study.
Eligibility and selection process Graduate students in good standing are encouraged to apply. Admission will be based on academic record, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation.

Living arrangements  During the first week, students will be assigned a dormitory-style room in a lodge on a ranch owned by a non-governmental organization. During the second week, students will be housed in hotels (double rooms).
Courses and credits Students will enroll for 9 hours of credit including:
- EDHE 690: Issues in Higher Education – Service Learning (5 hours)
- EDCP 622: Research and Reading – Higher Education and Development (4 hours)
Cost Billed by Ohio University
- Tuition: 9 credit hours of OU Tuition
- Administrative Fee: $150
- Program Fee: $1000
Out-of-pocket expenses
- Passport and photos: $107
- Exit tax: $30
- Immunizations & Anti-malarial medications: $275
- Snacks and lunches 2nd week: $100
- Personal/Incidentals: $100
The program fee includes roundtrip airfare; in-country transportation, housing, insurance, and all food except most lunches during the second week.
