| Hokuriku University, a private university of 4,000 students in the traditional Japanese city of Kanazawa, offers a three-week summer Japanese language and culture course. Highlights of this program include weekend excursions to historical and cultural sights as well as the chance to participate in traditional Japanese activities such as the tea ceremony, flower arranging, and seal engraving. | Eligibility and selection process The curriculum of this program is geared towards students who have a beginner's level of Japanese proficiency who have already mastered basic reading, writing and speaking skills. This program is open to undergraduate students with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA and who have completed JPN 1120 (formerly JPN 113) or the equivalent by the time the program begins. Admission will be based upon academic record, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy. This program does not accept non-Ohio University students. Application deadline Living Arrangements Students will stay in a university dormitory throughout the program. They will also have the opportunity to stay with a Japanese family during a homestay weekend. Breakfast, dinner, and some lunches are provided by the program. Courses & Credits Students will earn four hours of transfer credit (JPN 3990, formerly JPN 399). Because the program is shorter than an Ohio University semester, Hokuriku program credit cannot be substituted for any Japanese course required in Ohio University’s 1000 or 2000-level sequence. Students accepted to the Hokuriku Program are also required to register for a two-credit orientation course during the spring semester preceding the program. Entry and exit requirements U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now. Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country. Entry and exit requirements for this country can be found here. US citizens will not need a visa or other special documents to enter Japan for up to 90 days. Please also note that visa requirements may vary if you plan to stay in the country longer than the program dates or travel to other countries during or after the program.
