| This environmentally-focused study abroad program takes place in the Edinburgh, Scotland, a city that’s history and cultural scene offers “the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary,” according to its website. Students will spend five weeks studying environmental history, urban ecology and sustainability planning in one of Europe’s most progressive cities. Along with class instruction and lectures, field trips and guest speakers will introduce students to key concepts relating to forest and park management, social and environmental justice issues, urban provisioning and urban ecology as they relate to the distribution of urban amenities and disamenities. |
| With more than half the world's population living “urban” already, and the movement from rural to urban accelerating rapidly, it is imperative that “we design our new cities - and retrofit our old ones - so that they are more efficient, just and livable places,” according to Program Director Dr. Geoff Buckley. Anyone interested in environmental history, urban ecology and sustainability will be interested in this program, especially as it takes place in Edinburgh, a city renowned for its reputation as a leader in the worldwide effort to “green” our cities. Program dates June 17 - July 21, 2012 Eligibility and selection process This program is open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Ohio University who are interested in environmental geography, urban history, urban planning and sustainability. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or obtain permission from the Program Director to be eligible to apply. Applicants must complete a pre-departure orientation as well as an interview with the Program Director and Program Assistant. This program is NOT available to NON-OHIO students. Students on judicial probation at the start of the study abroad program will not be allowed to participate; there is an appeal process for those with B-level violations. Click here to read the entire judicial policy. Application deadline IMPORTANT: The application deadline has been extended to 3/9/12. However you are advised to submit your application as soon as possible because the faculty director will start the process of nominating students to the program in the w/c 2/20/12. This means all the places may be filled before 3/9/12. Living arrangements Students will stay in on-campus housing at the University of Edinburgh. A variety of rooms are available, including standards singles en-suite, standard doubles and doubles en-suite. Rooms are all within convenient walking distance of the university and include a “full Scottish breakfast.” Courses and credits Both undergraduate and graduate students will enroll in two courses, GEOG 456 (City and Environment and an urban history course. They will fulfill requirements for several of the geography major tracks and the Environmental Studies certificate. Additionally, students will earn one additional independent study credit. Undergraduates enroll in a total of nine credit hours while graduate students enroll in a total of 11 credit hours. US citizens won’t need a visa to enter the country for the length of this program. The Office of Education Abroad will provide a letter for you to carry when you travel that will explain your reason for entry into the country. You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country.
