Faculty member honors mother by establishing J-School internship


When Director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Robert Stewart learned that some journalism students had a passion for reporting on culture and religion abroad, he decided to establish the Maxine Stewart Foreign Correspondence Internship for Coverage of Culture and Religion Scholarship.

As a career missionary in Thailand, Stewart’s mother, Maxine, reported and wrote hundreds of stories about work being done by fellow missionaries.

The scholarship would be a way to honor his mother while supporting students who are full-time, degree-seeking undergraduates enrolled in or accepted for admission to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. To be eligible for the scholarship, students first must complete a foreign correspondence capstone course and be interviewed by members of the John R. Wilhelm Foreign Correspondence Internship Program interview committee.

“Some students want to cover hard news, but there are other aspects of life as well. I thought we ought to have a scholarship devoted specifically to the theme of culture and religion,” Stewart said. The scholarship fund helps recipients cover travel and housing costs associated with the internship.

Stewart’s parents moved to Thailand as Southern Baptist missionaries in 1958, when he was just 15 months old. He remained in Thailand with them until 1975, when he graduated from high school. His parents remained in Thailand until 1993, when they retired and moved back to the United States.

“The main goal is for students to have an experience covering culture and religion in another part of the world, especially if this is something that they want to do in the future. This scholarship is designed to make that ambition possible,” Stewart said. 

Stewart’s gift is a part of Ohio University's The Promise Lives Campaign, which seeks to raise $450 million by June 30, 2015, and already has secured more than $440 million toward its goal in support of students, faculty, programs, partnerships and select facilities at Ohio University.
