Ohio University Southern Campus celebrates nursing program’s 10th anniversary

More than 150 students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members gathered for the Ohio University Southern Campus “Dean’s Gala” on Feb. 23 to celebrate 10 years of nursing education on the Campus.

Launched in 2003, the Southern Campus’s comprehensive Nursing Education Center offers associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs as well as LPN to RN and RN to BSN programs. In addition, the campus’s new accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is designed for individuals with existing baccalaureate degrees and a desire to pursue nursing.

The evening, which took place in the Mains Rotunda in the Campus’s Riffe Building, raised more than $15,000 in support of nursing education. The program featured Southern Campus Dean Bill Willan, Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis and Southern Campus and The Promise Lives Campaign Committee Chair Vincenzo Fressola, who earned his master’s degree in business administration from Ohio University in 2010.

“The Tri-State community joined us to celebrate the nursing program. The Riffe Rotunda has never looked better, and the feedback has been tremendous,” Willan said. “It was a wonderful evening highlighted by cool jazz, warm companionship and hot bidding on some wonderful prizes – not to mention a rousing and inspirational speech by President McDavis.”

The evening included the premiere of a special video produced by Brad Bear in the Southern Campus’s Electronic Media Department. The video featured nursing students and alumni who have received scholarships: students like Summer Locascio, who said “the one great thing about the scholarship was that I felt like it gave me a second chance, when I almost felt like I didn’t deserve it. This scholarship has greatly helped me.”

Willan added, “we’ve been fortunate over the years to have received substantial support from our community. It’s allowed us to have programs that are recognized for their excellence.”
