AFSCME negotiations set to begin

Current contract expires March 1

The university will soon enter into negotiations with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Ohio Council 8, Local 1699, for a new contract. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement, signed in 2010, expires at 5 p.m. March 1, 2013.

Erika Pearsol-Christie, director of Employee and Labor Relations, said OHIO’s negotiation team will meet this month with James Shonborn, president of Local 1699, and other representatives from the union to set ground rules and a schedule for negotiations, which will begin in January 2013.

“We will work diligently with the union to reach an agreement which will serve the best interests of both parties,” she said.

One of the ground rules is likely to be a moratorium on discussions with the press and other public communication, Pearsol-Christie said.

Local 1699 represents approximately 542 skilled trades and service employees on the Athens, Zanesville and Chillicothe campuses. A full list of classifications covered by the union is contained in the current AFSCME contract at http://www.ohio.edu/hr/employee-labor/afscme.cfm/.
