Meet United Appeal campaign chair Jessica Wingett

Community involvement is a lifestyle to Jessica Wingett, manager in the Office of Research and Grants at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and chair of the United Appeal campaign at OHIO.

As she prepares to kick off the University’s participation in this countywide campaign, Wingett took a moment to sit down with Ohio University Compass and talk about her past involvement with and future plans for the campaign.

How did you get involved with the United Appeal campaign?

Wingett: My husband and I have been contributors for many, many years. Last year, I volunteered to be a member of the University’s United Appeal Campaign Committee, simply because we believe in the United Appeal. I was contacted about chairing the committee this year and I am very excited and honored.

You said you believe in the United Appeal. What moves you about this organization?

The United Appeal supports so many different agencies. The main draw with the United Appeal, for us, is that these are all local agencies. The dollars that we contribute actually stay in the community, and that is very important to me and my husband . We’re from this community, and we see on a daily basis the needs of the community. So the fact that we can donate to a central organization that will then distribute those funds locally is a major draw for us.

Why do you think it is important that OHIO participate in the United Appeal campaign?

I believe that the people of OHIO are very fortunate to have the jobs that we have, as these types of jobs are few and far between in this area. I personally feel that it’s our responsibility to give back when we can.

What is your advice to those employees who cannot give financially to the United Appeal?

All of us have gifts; whether they are time, money, or even simple support. It costs nothing and takes very little time to get in touch with one of these member agencies and let them know how much you appreciate them. That’s a gift in and of itself.

The United Appeal campaign at OHIO University will kick off with an event on Oct. 7. OHIO employees will have the opportunity to give through a one-time donation or through paycheck deductions.
