Homecoming 2011 will go 'Beyond the Bricks'


The Ohio University Alumni Association will sponsor a variety of activities for alumni of all ages during this year’s Homecoming weekend "Beyond the Bricks," Oct. 14-16.

Although Homecoming begins on the Athens campus Monday, Oct. 10, alumni returning to campus for the weekend will enjoy the "Yell Like Hell Pep Rally," on Friday, Oct. 14, coordinated by the Ohio University Homecoming Steering Committee (OUHSC). The rally will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Bicentennial Park.

New to Homecoming weekend this year is "Rock the Block," to be held on Union, Court, and College Streets from 7-11 p.m. on Friday evening. The mini block party will feature performances from Shallowtail and Dave Rave.

Ohio Brew Week is featuring OHIO alumni craft brewers and sponsoring a beer garden. At the Ridges, hayrides will also take place both Friday and Saturday night.  Look for the "Proud Alumnus" button-pins to be given to alumni at all OUAA events.

Also on Friday evening is the annual Alumni Awards Gala at Baker University Center Ballroom from 5:30-9 p.m. Tickets to the optional black tie event are $75 and will include a dinner, reception and program honoring esteemed alumni and one honorary alumnus.

The morning of Saturday, Oct. 15 continues the weekend’s events beginning with a free Alumni Coffee Hour at 9:30 a.m. in the Baker University Center’s Front Room coffeehouse. Coffee, hot chocolate and specialty drinks will be provided free, courtesy of the Alumni Association and sponsored by Nationwide Insurance.  

Following the Coffee Hour is the annual Homecoming Parade at 10 a.m. on Court Street, coordinated by the OUHSC. For those who wish to participate with a float or banner entry, packets are available now at ohio.edu/homecoming. Also on Saturday morning, Konneker Alumni Center will open its doors from 10:30 a.m.-noon for an Open House in celebration of its 30th anniversary.

The pre-game Bobcat Bash will be held from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the first floor and Atrium Café in Grover Center. Included in a $15 ticket is music, picnic food, beverages (including beer and wine), and free OHIO merchandise for attendees.

The Bobcat Bash leads up to the OHIO vs. Ball State football game at 3:30 p.m., featuring a Marching 110 performance at halftime and presentation of the 2011 Alumni Awardees. During the game both Nationwide Insurance and the Alumni Association will have a table at Peden Stadium for merchandise drawings.

Following the football game is OHIO Volleyball vs. Toledo at 6 p.m., with the Alumni Varsity Band performing. During the game, the Alumni Association will have a table at the Convocation Center for merchandise drawings.

Homecoming weekend attendees can renew their vows at the Alumni Association’s “OH, I dO” vow renewal ceremony scheduled for 18:04 (6:04 p.m.) at Galbreath Chapel. Couples will receive a champagne toast with keepsake glass and photo.
