Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.
How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?
I was very surprised. I had no idea I had been nominated!
What is your current position and how long have you worked at the University?
I've worked in the Facilities Management department on the Zanesville campus for 12 years. I began as a student employee in May 2000 and obtained a permanent/classified staff position in December 2001. I also worked part-time in the Continuing Education & PR department on our campus several months during 2010 and 2011, in addition to working in Facilities.
What are the most enjoyable things about your job?
The people I work with are by far the best part. They've been like family over the years.
What is your hometown and where do you live now?
I currently live in Zanesville. I grew up in a rural area about 25 minutes from Zanesville, near Mount Perry.
What was the last good book you read?
I just finished "The Hunger Games" series a few weeks ago.
What are your favorite TV shows?
I rarely watch anything on live TV, but I DVR several shows. Grey's Anatomy, Bones, and The Big Bang Theory are some of my favorites.
What is your favorite type of music?
I listen to all types – country, pop, hard rock, hip hop. It just depends on my mood.
If you weren't in your present job, you would be working as a ______.
I would likely be working in the K-12 system as a teacher or school psychologist.
What things in life are the most important to you?
My family and friends are the most important things in my life.
Where is your favorite vacation destination?
I love traveling. Beach vacations are probably my favorite, with Hilton Head Island being near the top of my list. But I also love the mountains and seeing new places in general.
What is the next big event you can't wait for?
I'm (tentatively) hoping to go to Europe in the next year or so. I've never been there, so I'm very excited about the possibility.
What is your dream car/truck/SUV?
An Audi A5 or Q5.
What is your favorite saying or quote?
The serenity prayer has always been one of my favorites: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
