Ohio University's Swing Dance Club, also known as the Jitterbug Club, will hold their "Swing Into Fall" event at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Baker University Center 240.
The two-part event includes a workshop with a free beginner swing dance lesson at 7 p.m., and a dance event with live music starting at 8 p.m., which will cost $5 for Jitterbug members and $7 for non-members. All Ohio University students are welcome to attend and experience is not necessary.
"We're geared towards beginners, so you don't have to have any previous experience to participate in our events or practices," said Jitterbug Club treasurer Alisha Estabrook. "Our club has a mix of dance levels, but in the end we're just a group of people who all love to swing dance."
The Jitterbug Club is comprised of more than 30 Ohio University students and Athens community members. The club holds weekly practices where they rehearse a variety of swing dance styles including the Lindy Hop, the Charleston and Balboa Swing Dance.
Throughout the year, the club holds swing dance events and workshops, and even competes in swing dance competitions.
In the past, the club has traveled to different swing dance competitions in Ohio and has competed against rival schools including the University of Dayton, Ohio State University, and Miami University.
"Being in this club has shown me that swing dance is everywhere," said Alex Bill, Jitterbug Club president. "There are exchanges, events and weekend events all around the country. Swing dance really is a great way to meet new people."
Bill, who joined the Jitterbug Club during his freshman year, said joining this club was the best decision he'd ever made as an undergraduate.
"The Jitterbug Club allows me to have my own fun time," Bill said. "Every Wednesday night, I get to spend an hour doing something that I love."
The Jitterbug Club practices every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Baker 240. Any students interested in swing dance are welcome to attend.
