Choose Ohio First STEMM Scholar Showcase is Jan. 23

Scholars asked to register online

The Choose Ohio First (COF) STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine) Scholar Showcase will take place Jan. 23 to honor some of the best college students in the state who are studying in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine disciplines.

The event will be held at the COSI Science Center in Columbus, Ohio, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The showcase will feature Jim Petro, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, along with several industry leaders and students as speakers for the event. There will also be research displays and poster presentations as well. The goal of this event is to honor the hard work displayed by COF STEMM students and to connect businesses with Ohio's top STEMM scholars.

"COF Scholars should attend so they can meet some of the folks that are responsible for the COF STEMM initiative and programming, to be recognized as a COF STEMM Scholar and to network with other program participants and professional entities as it may relate to future opportunities in the state of Ohio," said John Schriner, assistant dean of admissions and STEMM advisor. "All of our COF Scholars are truly brilliant folks who are very accomplished academically as well as being very involved with other activities at the medical school."

During the past four years, the Choose Ohio First Scholarship has been awarded to more than 4,000 students in 28 programs at 41 Ohio public and private institutions.

According to a Board of Regents spokesperson, about 50 scholarship recipients are currently enrolled at Ohio University.

"The COF STEMM program is an outstanding program that is geared to support students from Ohio in the STEMM areas with the intent of providing scholarship to help defray education costs while creating an atmosphere of support that will hopefully influence the students to stay in Ohio and keep our great state strong," Schriner said. "This is a great initiative to help the students address the issue of brain drain that has plagued many states in the recent past."

The Ohio Board of Regents is responsible for organizing this showcase and hopes all COF students register and attend the event. To register for the Showcase, click here.
