Anna E. Fowlkes, HIV/AIDS educator and motivational speaker, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Baker University Center Theatre. The day is recognized as National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
Fowlkes also will speak at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in the Women's Center located on the fourth floor of Baker University Center.
Fowlkes is an HIV/AIDS prevention advocate and spokesperson who educates and promotes AIDS awareness, HIV testing and safe sex practices for sexually active people. During her career, she has worked at Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry, the IRS and as a home health care worker. She was diagnosed HIV positive at age 59.
She has been featured in a variety of publications including the MSNBC.com photo blog with excerpts from "The Graying of AIDS."
She has wrote and performed in two videos: "Senior Dating – Older, Wiser, Safer," which deals with negotiating HIV testing and safer sex; and "Love Ain't Supposed to Hurt," which deals with physical abuse and HIV infection. The videos address the issues of dating and abuse for all individuals regardless of age, sexual orientation and/or race.
Fowlkes visit, which is part of the University's Black History Month celebration, is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs/Multicultural Center and the Black Student Cultural Programming Board.
