The School of Music will host local professional ensemble Jazz Spoken Here at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26 in the Baker Center Theater at Baker University Center. The concert will be a tribute to Ohio University alumnus Herman Leonard, who passed away in August and was internationally renowned for his photographs of jazz musicians.
The group will perform music by jazz composers and performers such as Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Chet Baker, all of whom were photographed by Leonard between 1940 and 1990.
The concert will be preceded by a biographical lecture about Leonard's life and accomplishments presented by Heather Pinson at 3:25 p.m. Pinson is the author of “The Jazz Image: Seeing Music Through Herman Leonard's Photography.”
In addition, donations of money and non-perishable goods will be accepted to assist the Athens Food Pantry, one of the region’s largest providers reaching out to those in need.
This event is free and open to the public.
