Police need your help to increase campus safety

Be aware of your surroundings

As we begin a new school year, the Ohio University Police Department wants to remind everyone of their role in helping to keep our Athens campus safe.

Whether you are a faculty member, staff member, or a student, the safety of our community relies on your vigilance, as much as that of the police.

OUPD encourages everyone to be alert to their surroundings and to report suspicious activity and circumstances to the police immediately. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you go
about your day:

1.    Be alert to unattended bags or packages, especially if left in public areas.

2.    Be cautious about opening unexpected packages received in the mail, especially if they have no return address, excessive postage, emit a strange odor, or exhibit staining.

3.    Be aware of vehicles parked illegally, especially large vehicles parked close to public buildings.

4.    Report people behaving in a strange or unusual manner, especially if they seem to be nervous or agitated, or are in a non-public area.

No one knows the campus better than the people who live, work, and study here every day. If you see something unusual, don’t hesitate to call OUPD at 740-593-1911.
