From staff reports
The “Under the Elms” Summer Concert Series will present eight free concerts this summer, beginning Wednesday, June 22, and each consecutive week until Wednesday, July 20, with an additional performance on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
Each of these outdoor concerts begin at 7 p.m. on the College Green adjacent to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
The "Under the Elms" Concert Band, or "Communiversity Band," comprises Ohio University faculty, students, and alumni, as well as community members from Athens and surrounding communities.
The ensemble rehearses one night a week prior to each performance. The music director and principal conductor of "Under the Elms" is Ohio University Director of Bands Andrew Trachsel.
This year's series features guest conductors from around the country: John Lynch from The University of Georgia, Bradley Genevro from Messiah College in Pennsylvania, and Ohio University's own Richard Suk, director of the Marching 110.
There will also be several guest soloists, including Christopher Hayes, professor of Trombone and associate director of the School of Music at Ohio University and two of his students.
Three special events are the appearance of the Ohio National Guard 122nd Army Band on Saturday, July 2; the Mountain State Brass Band on Saturday, July 16; and "Mozart on the Green" Chamber music on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
All of these events, generously supported by the College of Fine Arts, are free and open to the public. In the event of rain, concerts will be held in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to the concerts.
