$10 million gift to lead multipurpose center building effort

Commitment by Walter family will enhance facilities

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis announced today that Robert D. and Margaret (Peggy) Walter and the Walter Family Foundation will commit a $10 million gift to The Ohio University Foundation.

The Walters both graduated from Ohio University in 1967, Robert Walter with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and Margaret Walter with a bachelor of fine arts. Robert Walter earned his master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1970, and received an honorary doctorate from Ohio University in 1997. He is the retired chairman and CEO of Cardinal Health in Columbus, Ohio, a company he founded in 1971 at the age of 26. He served on Ohio University’s Board of Trustees from 1997 until 2005.

“It is gratifying to support our alma mater in this way,” said Robert Walter. “We understand the important role that donor support will play in fulfilling the University’s mission and achieving its vision. This gift will help the University enhance the student experience by supporting academic and co-curricular activities.”

Robert Walter currently serves on Ohio University’s Promise Lives Campaign Steering Committee, which is leading the effort to raise $450 million in support of Ohio University students, faculty, staff and programs.

The Walters have directed this $10 million gift to support the development and construction of a new multipurpose center and renovations in the Convocation Center on the Athens campus.

President McDavis will appoint a campus-wide committee to provide input on programming and functions for the multipurpose center, which will be used for activities including student life, academics, intramurals, intercollegiate athletic practices, and rehearsals for The Marching 110. Additional fundraising efforts to complete the project are under way at this time.

“We thank Bob and Peggy Walter for their continued generosity to Ohio University. Their leadership gift will greatly benefit students on our Athens campus,” said President McDavis. “As we continue to elevate the student experience, it is important that we have the facilities to foster our students’ learning and growth. This lead gift will help us do that as we strive to provide the best student-centered learning experience in the country.”

The Walters are generous supporters of Ohio University. In addition to their numerous volunteer activities, their $5 million gift during the Bicentennial Campaign supported the construction of Margaret M. Walter Hall. In addition, the Walter Family Foundation committed $2 million in 2008 for the purchase and renovation of 15 Park Place, which is nearing completion and will house the Walter International Education Center.

In 2008, Cardinal Health made a $2 million gift to Ohio University in honor of Robert Walter at the time of his retirement. Mr. Walter advised that this gift be used to create the Walter Center for Strategic Leadership, which was formally dedicated earlier this year in Ohio University’s College of Business.
