From staff reports
Forty years have passed, but Ohio University has not forgotten the Class of 1970, a class infamous for never having been able to experience their own commencement and (officially) graduate from OHIO.
This June, over 125 members from the class of 1970 are returning to Athens, Ohio, to finally take part in their own commencement ceremony, an opportunity many thought would never come.
“It is so nice to be officially graduating from Ohio University. It is an event that is very important not only to me but to many others who were unable to graduate due to a very difficult time in our history,” Cathy Chester, BSED from Chillicothe, said on the registration website for the event.
The weekend, created by the Ohio University Alumni Association in honor of the Class of 1970, will officially begin on Friday, June 11, with an opening reception at Vernon R. Alden Library. The reception will provide an opportunity to reconnect with peers and reminisce. Bill Kimok, University Archivist, will have a memorabilia display from the late 60’s-70 for guests to browse through during this event.
Saturday’s events include an open house at the Konneker Alumni Center, walking tours of campus, a picnic lunch, and posing for an official class photo.
The weekend’s marquee event, the commencement ceremony, will be held in concert with the Class of 2010 in the Convocation Center at 2 p.m., with line up for the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. To participate in the commencement ceremony, graduates must wear the appropriate cap and gown for the degree they would have obtained in 1970. Following the ceremony, graduates and their families will gather for a champagne toast and send off. Special invited guests for this closing event are faculty members who taught at the university during that era and still reside in the region.
The Class of 1970 Commencement Gathering is the closing event of the Alumni Association’s 150th Anniversary year. The OUAA Board of Directors and staff felt that recognizing and honoring the members from the Class of 1970 was a most fitting closure to the year’s activities.
