Comprehensive Exam Overview for Faculty

Faculty members working with students who are planning to write comprehensive exams as their capstone will need to approve/submit the following forms, which are initiated by the student (the assessment may come from CIS).

  1. Comprehensive Exam Notification of Intent Form
  2. Comprehensive Examination Reading List Form (not all programs)
  3. Comprehensive Oral Exam Evaluation Form (not all programs)
  4. Comprehensive Exam Committee Member Evaluation Form
  5. CIS Overall Graduate Assessment Survey

Comprehensive Exam Notification of Intent  Form

Starting in their second year, students will be allowed to start working on their capstone project . submit a professional project approval form. This form has to be signed by the chair and the committee members. Before the student submits this professional project of approval form, we hope that they would have talked to the chair and the committee members and have gotten a sense of what the project will be about. While this may change, we hope that the project approval is what the student will finally submit. The latest we suggest that students submit this form is the third semester, at this point this will give the cement enough time to work on the professional project.

Comprehensive Exam Reading List Form

Some programs require students to gather a reading list from their committee members. If this is applicable, the student completes the exam reading list form which will then be sent to all the committee members.  To complete the form, the student will list the courses they completed in each of the focus areas.  Each committee members will have an area/theme and upon getting the form will give a list of the texts the student  should read to prepare for the exam.

Comprehensive Exam Committee Member Evaluation and Oral Exam Evaluation Forms

Once the student has completed their exam, they will be required to initiate the committee member evaluation form (and the oral examination form for programs which required it). Each committee member will grade the exam and sign. The chair will them compile the responses and give the final grade.

For programs requiring the oral exam, working with the chair, the student will schedule the oral exam time, and following the exam, will again initiate the evaluation form.

CIS Overall Graduate Assessment Survey

The last request from the committee members and the chair is to submit a graduate assistant assessment survey. This assessment survey is for our learning outcomes for all the graduate programs within the center for international studies. We use the results from the survey to arrive to our final assessment report that helps us know how our students are doing in our programs. We appreciate your feedback on this as it will help us better prepare our students.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact the assistant director for graduate programs (international.studies@ohio.edu).
