Making an Impact

It wasn't that long ago that you were walking the same brick paths as today's Bobcats.

Consider sending the price of a few coffees to your alma mater in support of the next generation of Bobcats. By giving to OHIO, you're helping to educate the leaders of tomorrow.

College of Arts and Sciences - Jason Patrick Malizia, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

The reason I love Ohio University is a mix between the great campus, facilities, and faculty here at OU and the goods vibes from city of Athens. I have definitely had a great academic experience here at OU while never running out of things to do.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

The two main decisions that lead to me attending Ohio University were my acceptance into the Honors Tutorial College and the high praise given to Ohio University by my cousin, who graduated from OU the year I was applying to colleges. She said it was a great university and that I would like the people and atmosphere in both Athens and Ohio University, and she was right.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

Many students at Ohio University go above and beyond what is required of them to graduate.  I know many people who have studied abroad or have received special funding to pursue a project that otherwise could not be done, and many of these opportunities are funded by philanthropic support.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I have received a number of scholarships from the chemistry department, most of which are funded through alumni donations. These scholarships were especially great because a portion of the money went towards the research I am pursuing in Dr. Jeffrey Rack’s laboratory. These funds were especially helpful for undergraduate research because most of the supplies and instrumentation used in research are purchased by the professor themselves, and these scholarships and awards take some of the financial strain off the of the professor.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

My tentative long term career goals are to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry and become a professor. While I may not become a professor at Ohio University, I have formed strong relationships with a number of the faculty members here and will be open to assist them and their future students in research.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I would definitely encourage others to attend Ohio University. From an academic standpoint, OU has excellent programs, facilities, and faculties, along with a number of funding opportunities for things like studying abroad or undergraduate research. Ohio University and the city of Athens also have great diversity of extracurricular activities, ensuring that students will never run out of things to do in their free time.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

While I don’t have a singular favorite memory from my time at OU, I do know that I have made some very close friends who share many of my great times/memories. We have formed a very close bond and will definitely remain friends after we part from OU.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

Most of the funding I have received for undergraduate research has come from funds set up by alumni donations. I feel that alumni giving back to Ohio University is important for current students to maximize their potential and pursue academic interests, such as studying abroad or undergraduate research, that are not available at other universities.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

The most influential OU alumnus was my cousin, who had a serious impact factor on me attending school here. Besides that, I have met a number of alumni who were always friendly and gave me good advice on my future endeavors.

College of Business - Emily Tedford, '16

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love the atmosphere and the people at Ohio University. I’ve made friendships here that will last a lifetime, and connections that I anticipate will help me a lot in the future with obtaining a career.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

The Honors Tutorial College provided many unique opportunities, such as one-on-one tutorials with professors in our field, that I could not find at other schools. That opportunity, and the atmosphere on campus, really drew me to OHIO.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

Donations to the university assist with the funding of various resources. For example, several groups with which I am involved benefit greatly from the use of industry-standard equipment and databases, which are funded through donations. In addition, scholarships that are donation-based allow for high-potential students to add OHIO to their final list of schools, whereas before they may not have been able to afford to attend.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I have received the Gateway Excellence Scholarship. It was a key factor in deciding to attend OHIO, as I can focus on my studies and maintain my academic standing without needing to worry about obtaining a job.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I hope to be in the position to assist future students after graduation. If I can, I intend to provide money for scholarships or resources – I know how much they helped me and would like to return the favor to future classes.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I would definitely encourage students to attend OHIO. I think that the atmosphere and alumni network are second to none. In addition, there are a number of great opportunities available to the students, academically, personally and professionally.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

One of my favorite memories at OHIO is hanging out in the residence halls with my close friends the last night of finals week and watching movies, eating food from local restaurants, and just relaxing after a challenging semester.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College in this website?

Funding from alumni has afforded me many opportunities. I have gone on several trips with the University. Some places I have gotten to go are Austin, Texas; New York City; and Salt Lake City, Utah. I would love to see other students get the opportunities to take trips like that with the University.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?
I have had the opportunity to speak with a wide variety of alumni, and every single one of them comments on the atmosphere on campus and how OHIO’s campus feels like home so quickly after first arriving. When I was deciding what college to attend, that feedback was critical to the process. Since I have arrived at school, I have networked with a number of alumni who have given me valuable advice on school, work, and life.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

It is close to home and convenient to commute to campus. Plus, the academic credits are very transferrable.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

This type of support is helpful to students to further their education and become successful when they may not otherwise have that opportunity.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

The scholarship support I have received has made my college experience a lot less stressful. The financial support allows me to focus more on studying and schoolwork rather than having to work more hours at a job outside of school.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I am not sure, but I look to support the nursing program and nursing students in some way, perhaps as a mentor sharing my experiences and advice.

Would you encourage others to attend Ohio University Chillicothe? If so, why?

Yes, the people on campus really care about the students’ success, and that makes a difference.

Have any alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

Yes. I am a student worker on campus, and my boss (Beth Tilley) is an alumnus and has been a great mentor to me.

Scripps College of Communication - Paul Sebastian Bulucz, '14

Major: Bachelor of Science in Communication; Minor: Business Administration; Global Leadership Center Certificate

Anticipated year of graduation: May 2014

What do you love about Ohio University?

Ohio University is a beautiful campus and an excellent academic environment. I love to walk across campus and to engage in thought-provoking discussions with my professors and classmates. Also, the brick buildings and streets remind me of Europe and make me feel at home.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

The scholarships lightened my financial burden which allowed me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. I wanted to honor the ones that made these scholarships possible by attempting to be an excellent student. I know that their sacrifice helped me receive an outstanding education that will enable me to give back to the community.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I would be honored to be able to give back to Ohio University someday. Until then, I am committed to being an active alumnus, to do my best to represent Ohio University, and to direct any potential student to Ohio University.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Yes, of course. First of all, I would encourage others to attend Ohio University because of the excellent level of education that they are ensured to receive. Also, they can expect to make some wonderful memories and to build relationships that I am sure will last a lifetime.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I was able to attend the inauguration of The Schoonover Center and that was a special day for me. I felt that that day laid down a path for me and for the future generations of students who will be equipped to make a difference wherever they will go.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I was honored to be chosen to represent The Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University, and I truly hope Scripps alumni will know how great an impact they can have by contributing towards the success of students just like me.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

Ohio University Eastern - Riley Paige McDiffitt, '16

What do you love about Ohio University?

I attend the Eastern campus of Ohio University and to pin point merely a handful of things I love about the college is incredibly difficult. First and foremost, I love the sense of belonging and amiable atmosphere. It is easy and worthwhile to get involved with campus activities because nearly every staff member is kind and approachable as well as helpful. The academic and intramural opportunities are abundant and high-quality, which creates a sense of social good-nature among the students as well. At the Eastern campus, academic success is at my fingertips and precious friends and memories are regularly made.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

Students and staff knowing each other by name is commonplace at OUE. This aspect of feeling important and having teachers, counselors, and academic advisors that were knowledgeable as well as genuinely caring about my academic progress really sold me on attending this college.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

OHIO should be philanthropically supported because such support would provide excellent educational opportunities and the chance to have a bright and successful future to students who receive scholarships or participate in campus organizations. Philanthropic support would especially affect those students whose financial situation is the only aspect hindering them from furthering their education.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I received a wonderful scholarship from OUE. This scholarship significantly affected my college experience because, through it, the pressures of financial debt are not weighing me down. As long as my GPA remains high, I will get an excellent undergraduate education while my tuition is paid for by the college. This stipulation encourages me to do my best in each class. Such an encouragement creates a circular effect - for the better I do in class, the more sense of accomplishment I feel, which pushes me to be even better next semester.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

After graduation, I plan on supporting OHIO by participating in Alumni activities as well as being willing to provide financial support. I am interested in establishing a scholarship for future students because the scholarship I received has been incredibly beneficial.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I DO encourage others to attend OHIO and will continue to do so even after I’ve graduated. Attending this university has been an educationally and emotionally rewarding experience for me. I have been significantly supported, aided, and assured by the staff and my peers. If I could go back in time, I would choose to attend OUE all over again.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I have many fond memories of OHIO. Some involve campus picnics where the college provided free food and everyone headed outside because the weather had been warming up. Others involve the many thrilling and hilarious memories I gained from participating in OUE’s theatrical production of A Christmas Carol. Of all these memories, my favorites have to consist of lounging in between classes with my friends. There is a large lobby in the cross-paths of the library and student café. My friends and I pushed a few comfy chairs and a table to the center in order to create a convenient place for students to relax for a few moments between classes. Or at least, that was the plan. At least once a week, I and a handful of my friends have several hour breaks between classes which we choose to spend sitting in our self-made lounge. Other students often come and go during these hours, pulling up chairs and making new conversation. Sitting there has helped me start new friendships as well as grow closer to my previous friends. It’s an awesome experience!

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your campus for this website?

I was asked politely to represent Ohio University and making the decision to say yes was simple. I love attending this school and am excited and proud to represent it.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how? Several people from my youth group have graduated from OUE and have been successful in their careers.

Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education - Kristen Brenneman, '16

What do you love about Ohio University?

Ohio University is truly a magical place to me. The comforting atmosphere, the friendly people, and the beautiful scenery surrounding it all make Ohio U a perfect University.

Ohio University’s well-known education program attracted me the most, and the beautiful campus was just icing on the cake!

This support provides every student at OHIO with the opportunity to pursue a bright and successful future both academically and socially in many different ways.

Absolutely, being a part of the community at OHIO has changed my life in so many positive ways. I cannot imagine myself spending these four years anywhere else.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

Attending my first Ohio University football game. The green and white bobcat spirit was overpowering! Also the opportunity to work in the Patton College of Education has been and continues to be such an unforgettable experience.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

It is my pleasure to represent Ohio University and my college because I feel it is the least I can do to repay the staff and individuals who made have made Ohio University so welcoming for me. I think that the alumni who contribute should hear first-hand from the students how their contributions have impacted and have helped make for their better future.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

I haven’t been in contact with many Alumni, but any contribution they have made is greatly appreciated by all students!

Russ College of Engineering and Technology - Raven King, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love the small college town feel and the beauty of the campus! Everyone is so friendly and willing to experience new things and meet new people.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

Not only did I get to live my dream of playing varsity softball at a D1 level, but I also get to fulfill my dream of being an engineer! Ken Sampson, the Associate Dean of Academics, talked with me and assured me that the engineering department will accommodate my crazy athletic schedule, and they have!

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

People should take pride in where they went to school! I know that when I leave I’m going to make sure people have heard of Ohio University and how awesome of a school it is! The more alumni give, the better OU can be. Facilities, classrooms, and resources- everything improves with the more Ohio receives. Thus creating a better college experience for even more students then we already have.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

Receiving the scholarships I have has helped along tremendously. I wouldn’t even be at OU if it wasn’t for the scholarships I have received. Thanks to generous donors, I’ve been able to handle college pretty much on my own without having to burden my parents. It has also helped me learn and appreciate the value of every dollar and taught me to be responsible financially!

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I plan on taking part of the engineering alumni network that is growing and improving each year so that I can help students learn of opportunities wherever I end up.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Absolutely! The school offers and high-quality education in a fun, friendly, and productive environment that is extremely easy to adapt to and be successful.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

My best memory of OU was my sophomore year in Wilson dorm.  It was a Saturday morning and there was a men’s basketball game against our rival Miami. My roommate and I woke up to our whole dorm being fired up for the game. There were people playing cornhole in the hallways and others were running around chanting how we were going to beat Miami!  The Convo was packed when we got there. Then the boys pulled out the win over Miami in an epic battle and it was amazing! Such an awesome day full of school spirit and pride!

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I want to help the Russ College of Engineering receive as much support as they deserve for offering me the best possible education I needed to be successful in a career. Anyway that I can give back and show my gratitude to the faculty, staff, and especially my professors, I would do it! I’ve created friendships here that I will carry on for the rest of my life.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

Alumni have been extremely supportive and genuinely interested in my progress all throughout my 4 years here. Between softball alumni who have followed our softball team around to cheer us on at tournaments and engineering alumni who have offered help and advice in landing me interviews for internships; alumni have been there every step of the way. I wouldn’t have agreed to come to Ohio University to play softball and earn my education if it wasn’t for the people who were here at the time and showed me true friendship.

College of Fine Arts - Kristopher Terry, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love a lot of things about OU, but what I love most are the Dance Department and the great friendships I’ve built over the past 3+ years. I have learned more than I could possibly imagine throughout my college career and had the pleasure of gaining some of the best friends I could have.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I decided to attend OU largely because of the dance program. I knew it had a great reputation and could teach me a lot of things that I didn’t get from my dance experience in high school. I also chose to attend OU because of the beautiful campus and isolation from any major city.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I believe people should support because the only way to continue to advance as a society is to educate our youth in the best way we can. Without a great education for young people, society doesn’t move forward.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

Honestly the fact that I had the scholarship made this whole college experience possible. Without the scholarships I received I’m not sure that I would have been able to finish my undergrad years here.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I hope that someday I would be able to contribute financially to the dance school. I believe they need as much financial support as they can get.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Absolutely. This school has given me a great education in and outside the dance program and there are several programs, such as nursing and journalism that are some of the best in the country. It also has an amazing college atmosphere.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

The best memory of my time at OU was getting cast in my first piece in the school of dance.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I decided to be a representative because I’ve had such an amazing experiences here and I love sharing those experiences with other people.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

One of my dance instructors from a high school is an alumna of OU, and she reminds me all the time to work hard and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.

College of Health Sciences and Professions - Janice Brewer, '15

What do you love about Ohio University?

The support I have received from Ohio University is unmatched. Every professor I come in contact with pushes me to succeed and encourages my studies and goals. Ohio University offers the compelling curriculum for my educational direction and coursework. I am a part of a new developing program that hardly any other school offers; a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Nutrition. I feel challenged and thought provoked in my classes; this is how I know I am receiving a quality education, and for that I am always grateful.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I originally chose Ohio University because of a childhood friend attending Hocking College. I visited the area often and toured around Athens. I felt the aura of the community and knew this was my transfer school. When I discovered a program for Environmental Nutrition, I knew I would feel at home, and that this opportunity would be a huge stepping stone to my future in Food Systems research and related health topics. This school is the obvious choice for excellent preparation for professional or graduate school.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I’ve never seen a community that supports each other more than OHIO and the Athens area. Students and professors are always giving to each other, whether it is monetary support, moral support, or welfare support. Ohio is obviously thankful for this philanthropic support and it is applied wisely.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

As I have been supported, it is only appropriate to give a passionate student like myself the support he/she deserves. There are driven students who have the intent to change the world and utilize their education to the fullest. No student should be unable to achieve his or her dreams because of financial hardships. My support would be focused towards students passionate about Nutrition, Food Studies, Environmental Work, and everything in-between.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I do currently encourage others to attend OHIO. A friend from my hometown decided on OHIO for her transfer school and I am so glad to offer support, encouragement, and excitement for her. I often tell others that this community is more suitable than I ever could have imagined. There is a place for anyone and everyone at Ohio University.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

My best memory at OHIO is when my Intro to Nutrition professor, Deb Murray, hugged me as I turned in my final exam in Fall Semester 2013, and stated that, “We are going to have fun couple of years together.” Deb always stayed after class to chat and encouraged my questions during lecture. Deb is a true example of the support I have received from this school and the College of Health Science and Professions. Deb often states how proud she is of me for getting involved with school and community activities related to my coursework. I will never forget this incredible woman, for she has and will prove to be vital in my future success of my educational and professional work.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I agreed to represent Ohio University and my College of Health Science and Professions because I want to return the favor. The professors I have had are highly supportive and offer great feedback. When I come to them about classwork or ideas related to my major, they have scholarly advice and can help keep me going in the right direction.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?
My mother owns a salon in my hometown and has been cutting hair for 35 years. Many of her clients are OHIO alumni and always have positive and wonderful things to say about OHIO and the Athens community. It was a great relief knowing that before moving to a whole new place of residency.

Honors Tutorial College - Katie Lasco, '15

What do you love about Ohio University?

The best part about OHIO is the endless number of opportunities available to explore. In my time here, I’ve gotten hooked on rock climbing, gone to salsa dance nights, joined a female acapella singing group, attended research presentations by faculty, and made a million friends from all different backgrounds. I truly believe OHIO offers something for everybody.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I can remember the day in the spring of my senior year when I visited the Honors Tutorial College and learned I was to be accepted into the Business program. I felt an incredible sense of clarity and belonging; after so many months of searching for colleges, I had finally made my choice.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I think that donating to OHIO is more than just a financial contribution; it makes you part of something great. There are so many people here doing amazing things, and giving forms a connection between you and the people here that can lead to endless opportunities.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

As a recipient of the Gateway scholarship, I am able to focus on having the best learning experience possible without having to worry about student loans. As a freshman, this enabled me to accept an unpaid, class-credit internship at the Ohio University Office of Sustainability instead of a traditional student job. Since then, I have become coordinator of a sustainability leadership program and feel I’ve made a true impression towards Ohio University’s efforts to reduce their impact on the environment.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I plan on making regular contributions to the new Sustainability Fund, which will go towards supporting activities to help Ohio University be a sustainable campus, such as events, academic research grants, renewable energy, etc.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Absolutely. Ohio offers the perfect college experience: a small city, beautiful campus, and friendly people. It’s the perfect transition between high school and the “real world,” with a true community feeling, but still offering an enormous amount of opportunities to learn.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I have so many that it’s hard to choose! One of my best memories is from Mom’s weekend in the spring of 2013. My mom, grandmother, and little sister came down to visit, and we all slept crammed together in my tiny dorm room! We went to the theater department’s showing of The Rose Tattoo, then staying up half the night giggling. It was so much fun.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I was asked by my Dean to represent the Honors Tutorial College, and I felt it was my duty to give back to the college. Plus, it’s a cool opportunity!

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?
My older cousin and his now-wife graduated from the College of Business several years ago with degrees in Accounting and Marketing. They live in Charlotte, North Carolina and are very successful. They love talking about their time at Ohio (they had an OU ice sculpture at the wedding!), and seeing the success they’ve had because of their education is inspiring to me.

Center for International Studies - Nihal Said, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

Ohio University is a very different from Cairo University where I did my undergraduate studies. Among the main things I love and appreciate at Ohio University is the diversity of the international students population at OU, the hospitality of the Athens community, the dedication of OU professors, and the availably of different professional development opportunities for students.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I applied to Ohio University due to the uniqueness of the communication and development studies program at Ohio University that was a perfect match to my interest in quantitative analysis, media, and development in Egypt after the Arab Spring protests. Also, I am an Open Society Foundation Fellowship student, and due to the fact that this fellowship has sent a lot of students to Ohio University I was placed at Ohio University.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

Philanthropic support is something of value to all Ohio University students and especially international students. This support provides the university the ability to allocate money to support students’ research, creative activity, and professional development. An important outcome that results from funding students to present their work is that students interact with other students and faculty associated with different universities and hence, increases the publicity of Ohio University in the United States and Abroad.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I have received the Student Enhancement Award that sponsors students to conduct research and present their work in a conference under the supervision of a faculty. This experience enhanced my college experience as it provided me with the possibility of conducting my field research in Egypt. As a result this award presented the possibility of me conducting valuable and timely research of publishable quality.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

Hopefully when I graduate and work somewhere in the development field, I will keep in contact with my professors, and the advisors of student organizations so that we can plan networking events of relevance to students. When I go back to Egypt I will try to help the Ohio University recruiters in Egypt recruit students and help connect students with faculty whom they share interests with.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Yes because of the unique learning experience at Ohio University that combines dedicated and hard-working professors, university resources, and opportunities of development to students. All these unique features and other place Ohio in a unique and competitive position in the academic field

What is your best memory at OHIO?

My best memory at Ohio University is organizing the international dinner, which is the main cultural event we organize at the International Student Union. In that event we unite all the international student groups to cook ethnic food that represents their culture or a cause they support. Even though this event included a lot of organizing the outcome was rewarding, as we brought the world to Athens from cultural performances and food. So I believe in this event we truly embraced Ohio University’s vision of creating global leaders.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I believe in the role of research in enriching students’ university learning experience. Also, giving students the chance to apply their skills through these opportunities provides them a competitive advantage when they go on to the job market upon graduation. As a result when students are awarded research and professional development grants they learn about this process that is a needed skill in the job market today.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

Yes, when me and my classmates participated in the alumni networking event at Washington DC last year, we met a lot of OU alumni who were dedicated enough to take us to different organizations in DC to talk to OU alumni about their experience working at these organizations. They also gave us tips about how to make use of our time at OU to be competitive in the job market.

Ohio University Lancaster/Pickerington - Sarah Secoy, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love that Ohio University Lancaster has a more intimate atmosphere. The smaller class sizes provide the opportunity to bond with fellow students. At Ohio University Lancaster, the classroom experience is more interactive, which fosters a creative learning environment. The professors are supportive and get to know students by name. The staff here are friendly and focused on assisting students through their learning process. I have found many opportunities to get involved in campus activities and enhance my leadership skills at Ohio University.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I decided to attend Ohio University Lancaster because the regional campus is an affordable option and is located right here in my community. As a student with a social work major, I was able to complete the majority of required classes in Lancaster, and I am finishing the junior and senior social work classes at the Zanesville campus.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I am grateful for those who donate to Ohio University because students like me are given the necessary support to receive a higher education and achieve their goals. Because tuition reimbursement opportunities at Ohio University, I have been able to limit my work hours and focus on a receiving a quality education.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

As a full time college student, I am only able to work part-time. I have cut back my work hours even more during my senior year, as I am also participating in an internship two days a week.  I have been blessed to receive the Dean’s scholarship my sophomore, junior and seniors years from Ohio University Lancaster.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

As a future alumna who has received several awards for tuition reimbursement from Ohio University, I plan on supporting future OHIO students through giving back a yearly donation.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I would encourage others to attend Ohio University because I value the quality of education I have obtained at the Lancaster and Zanesville campuses. I have received the support and training necessary to begin a career in Social Work. Through my schooling I have acquired knowledge in social work history, ethics and values and new skills in public speaking, engagement, self-awareness, advocacy, and social work practice. Through Ohio University I was granted the opportunity to participate in the University Partnership Program (UPP) for 2 years.    Because of this program opportunity, I will be a marketable prospective employee for child welfare agencies across Ohio.  Upon graduation and employment at a Children Services agency, I will be awarded $10,000 for tuition reimbursement.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

My best memories at Ohio University Lancaster come from being involved in the in the petitioning group of Alpha Phi Omega, a service organization that values Friendship, Leadership, and Service. Through events that promote fellowship I have formed relationships among my fellow “brothers” in the fraternity. Several APO members and I have been sponsored by Ohio University Lancaster to participate in Alpha Phi Omega leadership training and conferences.  Being a part of APO has provided opportunities to serve the campus and the community. For example, every year our fraternity adopts a family of an OUL student who needs a little extra help. APO members collect gifts from the family’s wish list and OUL staff also contribute donations in the form of gift cards.  This year we adopted a single mother, her 2 children and their grandmother who also lives in the home.  This mother was overcome with emotion as she was presented with a full car load of presents and over $300 in gift cards.  APO members also provide service to the community through partnering with organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, local food pantries and free clothing stores, No Limits Basketball Camp for people who are disabled, the Red Cross, and Freedom is Never Free remembering local veterans.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your campus for this website?

I am proud to have this possibility to represent Ohio University Lancaster and to share my experiences as a student here.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?
My mom is an inspiration to me.  As a single mom, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Business at Ohio University Lancaster while working part time and caring for my older brother and me. Through observing her involvement in the community and how she had made a difference, I was motivated to pursue a career in social work and received my education at Ohio University Lancaster.

University Libraries - Megan Wipper, '15

What do you love about Ohio University?

As cliché as it sounds, I love everything about Ohio University. I love this school more than I ever thought I could. The environment, the traditions, the town, the people I've met, the professors I've had, the classes I've taken; I've had the best experience here and I wouldn't change anything.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I remember my first visit to OU; I fell in love. Coming in as a freshman I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. OU has a great "undecided" program that put a lot of effort into helping students find their future career, which is one of the many things that were appealing to me. Another reason is the beautiful campus. I wanted the quintessential 'college experience' and OHIO turned out to be the perfect decision. Just by simply walking around you can get a gist of the energy of the students and the great history of the town. I felt at home here and I felt as though OU was somewhere that I wanted to belong.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

Donating to OHIO is so important.  Since I work in the library, I see philanthropy in action every day. Our Learning Commons was funded through donor dollars and I see students using donor-funded group study rooms ALL the time. So many things in the library wouldn't be possible without the generous gifts from our alumni. I know that most of my friends, and myself, have benefitted in one way or another from the kindness of others choosing to give to the university.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

My freshman year I decided I really wanted to focus on my studies. I made school my number one priority because I finally had the opportunity to start fresh and accomplish great things. My GPA improved immensely from high school and I was therefore granted a $1000 scholarship. I couldn't have been more grateful for this amazing opportunity and it gave me the boost of confidence that I needed to continue excelling academically, and I haven't turned back since.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

After seeing how much alumni donations support our university, I definitely plan to support OU after I graduate. I believe that one of the most important ways to show my gratitude for all that the university did for me throughout my time here is to support future OHIO students financially in any way that I can. After working in the library, I realized how often it's used and how helpful it is to students. One of the ways I would help future students is by giving to improve the overall library experience so that they are able to continue using it and can continue to excel.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I would absolutely encourage others to attend OHIO. After being here for almost three years, Ohio University has become a home to me. Students often refer to the community as "the bobcat family" which I truly believe is what we are. It's hard to describe or put my finger on what exactly it is that makes OU so special but once you're here, you understand why students come here and never want to leave. OU has so many different things to offer and so many great opportunities available to students that it would be difficult to pass up the chance to attend such a great university.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

It's so hard to pick but I'd have to say my best memory is joining my sorority, Chi Omega. I came to OHIO knowing no one and was extremely nervous about this new chapter in my life. After joining my sorority, I can now surround myself with some of the most intelligent, inspirational, and motivated girls I've ever met; they push me to become a better person every day. Chi O gave me the opportunity to participate in philanthropic events for great causes, not only in my sorority, but also with other greek organizations that I wouldn't have had the chance to do otherwise. It also gave me some of the best friends I could've ever asked for.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I agreed to represent OHIO because I hope to share my love for the university with everyone that I possibly can. OHIO is such an amazing place, not only solely for academics, but because it's the total package. At OHIO, I've not only discovered what I want to do for the rest of my life, ultimately finding that Speech-Language Pathology is what I'm truly passionate about, but I learned responsibility, perseverance, and how to have a little fun along the way. It's everything I ever wanted from a college experience. I owe my future success to everything I've learned here and I will forever be grateful for the person it shaped me to be.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

My older brother is an OHIO grad and I'm currently trying to convince my little brother to come here next year as well, just so we can keep OHIO in the family blood. I love talking to my older brother about what it was like when he went here. Some things have definitely changed but a lot of what he talks about has stayed the same, and I think it's really interesting to learn about it either way. I was also able to talk with some Chi Omega alums during our chapter's centennial celebration last spring. They were able to put into perspective how much our alumni still continue to love the university as much as current students do which helped me cherish my time here even more.

Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine - Daniel Krajcik, '17

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love the Athens area, especially all of the outdoor opportunities that there are. I am really big into running and the trails here really make me excited to get outside for my workout. I also love all the small-town businesses. Dining at the small mom-and-pop diners that have unique foods with natural ingredients really helps me expand my knowledge about types of food. I also really enjoy being part of a big campus and having all the resources and experiences that come with it.

There is so much I love about OUHCOM; I could go on for hours talking about it. First, the feeling of family that we have down here is something that makes going to medical school here such a great experience. All of the faculty, staff, and students truly do care about each other and it’s obvious that everyone is committed to making the best doctors possible here. Also, the “medical school for Ohio” concept is really important to me. I have been an Ohioan my entire life and I don’t see myself leaving. I think it’s great that this college is dedicated to those who are from here and want to make an impact here. I feel very connected to my home state. I also really enjoy being connected to Ohio University down here in Athens and all of the benefits and experiences that they have to offer us while in our medical training.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I decided on OUHCOM because of its reputation in the state. I have only heard praises about the students that come out of here and I knew that this legacy is something I wanted to be part of. So many doctors I have worked with have told me that the graduates of here are so well prepared and can connect to their patients on a whole higher level. I also truly believe in the Osteopathic practice. Learning to diagnose problems with my hands and fixing them is rewarding to me, and I love doing it whenever I know is appropriate. Learning holistic medicine and treating patients as a whole seems like common sense to me and I knew this was the type of learning I wanted to engage in. Lastly, my interview day really sealed the deal for me. The welcome that we felt was so genuine and it was obvious that day that this truly is the best environment to learn in.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I know that in this day with the economy, donating money doesn’t seem like a top priority for many but it means the world to us. The cost of medical education right now is a very daunting issue that looms over us all the time. We are unsure of how healthcare is going to be when we graduate, and it is better for us to focus on learning than on monetary worries. The money that we receive inspires us to strive to be the greatest we can be while knowing that there are supporters out there cheering us on. It is not only important to give philanthropic support to us, but may be to you. Every year our college graduates over 140 students, most of who will stay in Ohio. There is a very good chance that in the future we will be taking care of your family, your friends, your neighbors, etc. so not only are you investing in our futures, but you are investing in your own!

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I did receive a small scholarship for my time here at OUHCOM for showing my interest in receiving a dual degree (such as an MPH or MBA). Although the scholarship may seem small, it does make a big difference. We have a limit on the amount of loans that we can take out, and receiving a scholarship helps me relax just a little bit more. Knowing that I have a small safety net in my budget puts me at ease and lets me focus on what is really important. This scholarship also allows me to have more opportunities. Even helping people costs us money sometimes! Having this extra bit of money gives me the opportunity to take experiences that have no monetary benefit at all, but will surely make me a better prepared doctor by serving others every opportunity I can get.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

After I graduate from school I know that I will give back to my school, through donations and my time. Once I become a doctor I think it would be great to give a little to new students to help them have the same great experiences I did. I also will give back through my time. I know I can be a good representative of our school and inspire more people to attend OUHCOM. I also love mentoring so I can picture myself training students in the hospital.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

YES! If I haven’t said it enough, I love my school! I have so much pride in myself, my classmates, and everything that is being done here to improve the future health of Ohio. I know that my experience here is different than every other medical school in the state and I want everyone to have the same amazing experience I am living right now. Medical school is done right here! I want everyone to become the best doctors possible and I know that this school truly trains doctors for the shear benefit of the health of our patients.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

My favorite memory is when I was elected the president of our entire student body. My classmates all inspired me to take this leadership role because they know that I can continue driving this school forward. During all last week up the election I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. It was something that I feel like I have been preparing for a long time, and I honestly can’t be more proud to lead such an AMAZING group of people. Getting the announcement of my election was a moment that will truly stay with me forever.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

Before I came to OUHCOM, I was inspired by all D.O.s that I worked with, whether from this school or elsewhere. They were the ones who made me want to attend this college because I knew I wanted to be a doctor just like them. Ever since I have gotten here, that feeling has been nonstop. The alumni that are on staff here truly know what to teach us and how to teach us. They are amazing role models for us and give us countless personal stories that have impacted them and inspire us to be the best. We also have had networking events with alumni, and it is so great for us to see that after all of this time, they still care about this school and they truly care about all of the students here, even if they don’t know them!

Division of Student Affairs - Anna Morton, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love everything about Ohio University! I love my major, my experiences and development, and how happy everyone is around campus. The environment cultivates such positivity within the Ohio University community that rubs off on everyone. Everyone that I meet I can connect with, by just being a fellow Bobcat you have a deep connection and something in common that makes you a part of the Bobcat family. Knowing that I am a part of such a passionate group of people, now and for years to come, gives me foundational support and confidence for what my future will bring.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I knew it was the school for me when I first visited campus. I was looking for Communication programs and Scripps College of Communication was top on my list for colleges. I fell in love with the beautiful bricks and buildings on campus, and how happy everyone I met was! OHIO was the first college I got accepted to, that was a sign for me and I knew that I was going before I even heard back from other schools. I made the best decision to come to OHIO.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

Support keeps the university as a whole upright and running the best that it can. Seeing people support OHIO supplies even more confidence in my degree and reemphasizes the value in my time spent at OHIO. Giving back to such an impactful institution gives every single Bobcat more support to face the world that lies ahead. Giving back means that you are giving forward to someone!

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I received the Bobcat Student Senate Leadership Scholarship. Nothing comes easy, and I value the opportunity that I had at OHIO to earn a scholarship that means so much more than a tuition waiver. The scholarship granted me flexibility and opportunity. Through earning the scholarship, I have learned invaluable lessons and gained experience that will help me in future. Without the scholarship I would not have been able to experience and learn these things because I would have had to preoccupy my time in other areas to get through the year. I thank Ohio University for being able to have the opportunity to focus on my development with the scholarship.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I plan to support OHIO students through donations to where it will impact students with need and also to support the student experience. Development of transferrable skills and character building are a top priority for me. One specific area I plan to support is the Student Senate Leadership Endowment Fund, this endowment fund aims to support and cultivate strong student leaders, give scholarships, and enhance skills necessary for future careers to come. I wish to support OHIO in all areas that are necessary with the ever-changing times, just as we are adaptable and require different needs, so does OHIO. I love OHIO and want to help it grow!

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Absolutely! Ohio University truly becomes your home. Every student that I meet at OHIO has such a deep love for the university and Athens. I want people to join the Bobcat family where they can make such a great place their new home too.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I have many, but one that stands out to me is an annual event called Athens Beautification Day. It is an amazing volunteer event that connects the Athens community and Ohio University to clean and restore parts of Athens. I have helped plan this event for four years now and every year the event has grown. Seeing the collaboration between the community and Ohio University highlights the deep care and passion that everyone who comes to Ohio experiences. I will be sure to come back to attend Athens Beautification Day in the spring once I have graduated!

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

Any opportunity I have to represent Ohio University and all the wonderful things it entails, I take that opportunity. I only wish to see Ohio grow in quality and value, and I believe that keeping connections with Ohio alumni is a vital part for the progression of Ohio University. Our alumni are so impressive, seeing alumni give back to OHIO for various projects has truly lightened my view on what is important in life, and that is giving back for the advancement of others.

Having close contact with alumni has opened opportunities for me that has helped me learn and grow professionally. The alumni that I interact with have helped me value my time at Ohio and the importance of keeping connections with current students to show the everlasting Bobcat pride.

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love the one-on-one instruction that I am able to receive with my professors and the close relationships that have been built.

University College - Alex Slaymaker, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

I love OHIO’s diverse major, minor, certificate, and extracurricular opportunities because these experiences prepare students for a life of meaning. Different people from varying walks of life can all find their social and academic niche here.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I immediately felt connected to the city and campus community. I knew the rolling hills and welcoming faces of Athens would be an environment I could thrive in.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

OHIO is growing in size and prestige because of the exceptional commitment of faculty to students, and our pursuit of ambitious long-term goals like carbon neutrality. This type of innovative progress requires financial backing from dedicated alumni who want to solidify OHIO’s position as an advocate for students and a leader in sustainability.

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

I have received a scholarship every quarter through the Gateway Award Program due to my high GPA. I first received this scholarship as a freshman due to my high GPA in high school, good ACT scores, and financial need.  I also have supplemented my income at OHIO by participating in paid-research opportunities with faculty across multiple campuses and working as a Resident Assistant for three years.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

After I graduate I want to serve as a resource to fellow Bobcats in the professional world through networking and as a resource for undergraduates searching for their calling in life. I want to give back to the University which helped me realize my true potential and pursue my passions. I plan to give to sustainability related initiatives on campus to help the University accomplish their Climate Action Plan goal of carbon neutrality by 2075 because I helped develop the plan and feel invested in its implementation. I think it is my responsibility as a Bobcat who cares about social and environmental viability to help support this important commitment.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

Attending OHIO was the best choice for me because of the research opportunities, talented faculty, extracurricular activities, and inspiring people both on campus and in the community. OHIO has changed my life and helped shape me into a successful and driven doer, armed with the skills and knowledge required to achieve my career goals.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I have been blessed with so many amazing experiences through volunteering in the community, working alongside talented staff and faculty on research projects, socializing with people from diverse walks of life, and becoming involved on campus. One of my fondest memories is the moment I won the Rudy Award for Undergraduate Leadership. After the University recognized my hard work and dedication to sustainability, I felt empowered and even more determined to make a difference on campus and in the world.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

The Bachelor in Specialized Studies program through University College allowed me to stay at the University I love, even though the specific major required to pursue my passions and career goals was not officially offered. Through BSS, I was able to combine stimulating courses from different departments and colleges for an applicable and multi-dimensional curriculum establishing a strong foundation for graduate studies in urban sustainability. Without this program I would have been forced to transfer to another school. For that reason, I am very appreciative of the BSS program and honored to represent my College.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?

OHIO alumni currently attending graduate school have been very helpful during my graduate school research, application, and visitation process. The Bobcat connection allowed me to get the inside student perspective on programs and provides a bridge to opportunities through networking sites like LinkedIn. Every time I connect with other Bobcats across the nation, they all reminisce longingly about Athens and their experience at OHIO and are happy to help out a fellow Bobcat.

Ohio University Zanesville - Stephanie Wahl, '14

What do you love about Ohio University?

What I love about Ohio University is that along with providing an outstanding educational experience the University offers a unique relational aspect that is cultivated between the students and professors. Each educator I have had has been very communicative, open to my ideas, (whether the subject pertains to the classroom or the field), and genuinely sincere in regard to any concern I have as a student. Each professor has gone above and beyond what I expected when I began perusing my degree. The professors are knowledgeable and approachable.

What made you decide to attend OHIO?

I decided to attend Ohio University Zanesville based on the location and accessibility of the regional campus. Being a non-traditional student returning to school after twenty years is intimidating and the smaller regional compass made the thought of obtaining a degree (for this stay at home mom) more manageable.

Why do you think people should support OHIO with philanthropic support?

I feel that philanthropic support of the University is something everyone who is able should participate in. What a blessing to have been given such an educational opportunity, who wouldn’t want to help assure that others can receive the same?

If you are a scholarship recipient, please describe how that opportunity has affected your college experience.

The regional scholarship that I have received was such a blessing to me. Receiving it was one of the first times when I truly felt that “Bobcat Pride” welling up within me. I felt like I was a part of a wonderful organization who valued education, engagement and unity within the student body.

How do you plan to support future OHIO students after you graduate?

I would love to be able to come back to the University (after obtaining my masters) and teach if the need arises. I feel that that giving the personal student commitment that I have received would probably be one of the best ways to support the traditions of the University.

Would you encourage others to attend OHIO? If so, why?

I would encourage anyone to attend Ohio University. The faculty and educators that I have had throughout my college experience have been second to none. The University offers exciting course offerings to fit any schedule; Plus Ohio offers one of the most affordable programs around.

What is your best memory at OHIO?

I have so many wonderful memories at the University that it is difficult to claim one as “best.” I think that one of my favorite memories comes from my very first semester at OUZ. I had put tremendous pressure on myself returning to school after over 20 years. I was determined but extremely nervous. I had a wonderful professor who spoke the most encouraging words I had ever gotten from a teacher. Honestly I can’t remember the exact words now, but I remember the feeling they produced within me. I felt so encouraged and empowered by her words. I never had that professor again after that, but I have spoken to her and thanked her for the “pep talk” that empowered me and motivated me to continue by dream of obtaining a degree.

Why did you agree to represent Ohio University and your College for this website?

I agreed because whenever I have asked something of the University the answer has always been YES. I have such a great appreciation for all that I have experienced and would like nothing more than to influence someone to support Ohio University in whatever way is possible.

Have any OHIO alumni influenced you before or during your time on campus? If so, how?  Christine Shaw has been amazing. If I could be anything near as supportive as she is of the University and its students I would be thrilled. I have never met another person who is set on promoting unity within the student body, planning exciting relevant campus events, and simply bringing a positive attitude to all things “Bobcat.”
