Office 365

Office 365 is a Microsoft subscription service that includes access to Office applications, online productivity services, and business services such as web conferencing, hosted email, and online storage. It also includes mobile versions of Office applications for smartphones and tablets.

How to Access

  • Sign in to Office using your OHIO credentials (remember to use your full OHIO email address as your login ID).
  • From any Microsoft page, use the Application Launcher (affectionately dubbed “the waffle”) in the upper left corner to access additional Office 356 applications. The Launcher appears in all Office 365 applications and is a quick connection to other Office 365 tools available to you.

OIT-managed Devices

You must have an active Office 365 subscription (see below) before you can install Office 365.

Windows (SCCM)
 
  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the OHIO network (wired or eduroam wi-fi for on-campus, VPN for off-campus).
  2. Open your Start Menu.
  3. Choose All Programs | Microsoft System Center | Software Manager
  4. Choose MS Office 365 - User Licensed.
  5. Once Office finishes installing, open one of the Office applications like Word or Excel and follow the prompts.
  6. If you are asked to sign in, choose Sign in using my school or work account and use your full @ohio.edu email address and OHIO password.
Mac
  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the OHIO network (wired or eduroam wi-fi for on-campus, VPN for off-campus).
  2. Under Applications, open Self Service.
  3. Under Software, choose Office 365. If this installer is not visible, you may need to contact your departmental IT technician to enable it.
  4. Once Office finishes installing, open one of the Office applications like Word or Excel and follow the prompts.
  5. If you are asked to sign in, choose Sign in using my school or work account and use your full @ohio.edu email address and OHIO password.
OHIO Computer Labs

A current version of Office is available for shared Mac computers in classrooms and labs. Administrators should contact the IT Service Desk to request.

Other Devices (personal devices, non-managed devices, etc.)

You must have an active Office 365 subscription (see below) before you can install Office 365.

Windows and Mac
  1. Log into https://catmail.ohio.edu.
  2. Choose the App Launcher (aka. waffle) in the upper left corner of your Catmail window and choose Office 365.
  3. Choose Install Office.
  4. Choose Office 365 Apps.
  5. Once the installer finishes downloading, open it, and follow the prompts.
  6. If prompted to sign in, choose the option to "sign in using my school or work account" and sign in with your full OHIO email address and password.

If you receive an "Administrative privileges required" error when installing a Windows version, find the Office 365 installer file you downloaded (usually in your Downloads folder), right click the file and choose "Run as Administrator."

iOS
  1. Go to the App Store.
  2. Search for Office 365 and choose the apps you want (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  3. Once the install finishes, open the app.
  4. Scroll through the welcome screens and click Get Started.
  5. When asked to sign in, enter your full @ohio.edu email address.
  6. If given a choice, select Organizational Account or Work Account.
  7. Enter your OHIO password.
Android
  1. Go to Google Play.
  2. Search for Office 365 and choose the apps you want (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  3. Click INSTALL.
  4. Accept the app's permissions request.
  5. Click INSTALL.
  6. Agree to the terms and conditions.
  7. Once the install is complete, open the app.
  8. Scroll through the welcome screens.
  9. When prompted to activate, enter your OHIO email address.
  10. If given a choice, select Organizational Account or Work Account.
  11. Enter your OHIO password.

Office 365 downloadable apps (A5 license):

  • Automatically included for:
    • All currently enrolled students
    • All faculty and current instructors of record
    • All administrative staff
    • Classified staff with demonstrated business need
    • All OUPD employees
  • Available by request only:
    • Other employees with demonstrated need
    • OHIO emeriti

How to Request

Current Employees

If you are an eligible OHIO account holder who needs access to the Office 365 downloadable apps, your manager can contact the IT Service Desk with the following information:

  • OHIO email address that needs the licensing change
  • Reason the employee needs increased access

Once the Service Desk has activated your subscription, the account holder can follow the instructions earlier on this page to install Office 365.

Your manager will need to renew your Office 365 subscription (at no charge) each year in June by submitting a new request.
