Sarah E. Jones, Ph.D.
Specialization: Organizational Communication; Difference Studies; Gender; Critical-Qualitative Methods\
Sarah E. Jones (Ph.D., Arizona State University) is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Dr. Jones’ research agenda explores the power and politics of gender in organizations–how gendered organizing creates subjectivities, polices behavior, and affects access to resources across communities. Her current research focus involves alternative organizing, unintentional membership, and corporeal commodification in the milk banking industry (the donation and in/formal exchange of breastmilk) for which she earned a Top Paper Award in NCA’s Rhetoric and Communication Theory Division (2017). Other works have taken on an interdisciplinary spirit spanning organizational and interpersonal divisions, including but not limited to transgender standpoint epistemologies in the workplace, the use of structured dialogue around gendered violence in the classroom, the politics of naming in/civility, and management of interpersonal crises through technology. Her work has been published in volumes such as Queer Communication Pedagogy: Intersectionality and Activism (2019), the Routledge Handbook of Communication and Bullying (2019), the Oxford Encyclopedia of Health and Risk Message Design and Processing (2017), and Mental Health in the Digital Age: Grave Dangers, Great Promise (2015).
Since 2015, Dr. Jones has been a certified facilitator with the Institute for Civil Dialogue (ICD), an Arizona-based non-profit whose goal is to promote engaged, civil discussion of social issues using a structured format for public dialogue. As part of ICD, she has facilitated workshops on civil communication for government agencies, religious and educational institutions, and community groups, publicly funded through departmental or community grants. Dr. Jones utilizes rounds of Civil Dialogue® in her undergraduate classrooms to develop civil speech and civil listening skills, and encourage collaborative discussion of difficult problems. Dr. Jones is also a certified facilitator with StoryScope: A Story Circles Project, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture created to celebrate cultural pluralism and strengthen communities through the art of storytelling. In 2017, she received ASU’s Award for Sustained Innovation in Creative Inquiry for her work with ICD and service as Co-President of ASU’s Graduate Women’s Association.
Dr. Jones is a recipient of PEO International’s Scholar Award (2018), a philanthropic educational organization dedicated to supporting women’s higher education, as well as numerous fellowships and teaching awards. Outside the office, Dr. Jones enjoys volunteering at local milk banks, hunting for classic vinyls, hiking/mountain biking, and learning to code.
