Standard for HIPAA Requests for Confidential Communications

Purpose

Ohio University will permit an individual to request to receive communications of Protected Health Information (PHI) from Ohio University by alternative means or at alternative locations.

Scope

This standard shall apply to all Ohio University HIPAA Covered Entities. 

Standard

  1. Ohio University will permit an individual to request to receive communications or PHI from Ohio University by alternative means or at alternative locations.  Such request must be made in writing.
  2. Ohio University may condition its response to this request upon:
    1. When appropriate, information as to how payment will be handled; and 
    2. Specification of an alternative address or other method of contact.
  3. Ohio University will not require an explanation from the individual as to the basis for the request.

This standard will be reviewed and approved by the University HIPAA Steering Committee, and other key stakeholders in the interest of ensuring the privacy and security of individual’s health information, as deemed appropriate based on the current regulatory requirement mandates.
