| MA Program
Requirements
The
MA Program offers four areas
of specialization: American
Politics, Comparative Politics,
International Relations, and
Political Theory.
The
MA program requires a minimum
of 50-quarter hours of graduate-level
credit (10 five-credit hour
courses) at the 500 and 600
level. Up to 12 hours of credit
may be taken in a related
discipline or transferred
from another graduate program
with the approval of the graduate
chair.
All MA students
must take POLS 600 Scope and Theory in Political Science. This course is
offered each fall quarter, and registration in POLS 600 is a prerequisite
for further coursework at the 600 (graduate only) level. All MA students
must also take either POLS 601 Quantitative Research Methods or POLS 602 Advanced Quantitative Analysis. In addition, all students are required to take three
600-level seminars, with one 600-level
seminar in their field of specialization.
Beyond the 25 hours
of required coursework, you are free to choose courses that interest you
and that make sense in terms of your program of study. However, at least
half your hours, including the one required 600-level seminar in the sub-field,
must be within your field of specialization. In addition, no more than
10 hours of POLS 592 Independent Study and 5 hours of POLS 595 Internship
can be counted toward fulfillment of MA degree requirements. If you choose
to take credit for work on a thesis, you may take up to 10 hours of POLS
695, but you may have no more than 20 total hours of non classroom courses
(POLS 592, 595, 695).
If you are on campus but
not enrolled in a regular course during the quarter in which
you take a comprehensive examination, the university requires
that you enroll for one credit hour. Political science students
normally enroll for one hour of POLS 591 to satisfy this requirement.
General requirements of the Office of Graduate Student Services,
such as the maintenance of a 3.0 average, are outlined in
the graduate catalog.
