The Department of Economics welcomes one new faculty member in September 2009.

John Dogbey Professor John Dogbey has joined the Department of Economics at Ohio University as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Professor Dogbey received his PhD degree in Economics from West Virginia University in May 2009. The title of his dissertation, which was supervised by Professors Russell Sobel and Christopher Coyne, was “Spillover Effects in Financial and International Development.” Professor Dogbey has teaching and research interests in international economics, financial economics and spatial econometrics.




Reaserch Expo 2009

On May 14, 2009, Economics majors Todd Hillard and Thomas Mulhall were awarded second place in the social science division of the 2009 Student Research Exposition sponsored by Offices of the Vice President for Research, Provost and President. Their paper, entitled “An Economic Analysis of the Financial Crisis,” examined the role of housing prices, risk management, and financial market deregulation in the lead-up to the credit crisis of 2008-2009. Professor William Shambora supervised the research. Graduate students presenting their research at expositions in other sessions were Sauvik Ghosh (“Culmination of Demand and Supply Mechanisms and Speculation in the Global Oil Market”) and Yi He (“Growth and Management of China’s Foreign Exchange Reserves”). Supervising professors were Shamila Jayasuriya, Khosrow Doroodian, and William Shambora.



On February 13, 2009, two graduate students participated in the International Student Union Research Exposition. Samuel Johnson presented “Determinants of Population Size: A Study of Access to Information in Africa” and Maira Savernini presented “An Econometric Investigation of the Brazilian Ethanol Export Market.” Supervising professors were Ariaster Chimeli, Shamila Jayasuriya, and Charlene Kalenkoski.
